Top achievements from Year One of our Accessibility Plan
YVR’s Accessibility Plan, Beyond Accessibility, outlines activities for all seven focus areas of the Canadian Transportation Agency’s Accessible Transportation for Persons with Disabilities Regulations. During the first year of its comprehensive three-year plan, YVR is proud to highlight the following achievements:
| Focus Area | Key Activity |
|---|---|
| Built Environment | Revamped existing washrooms in the International Arrivals area with the latest accessibility features and built two, new private single-stall washrooms featuring vertical push-button door openers and adult-sized changing benches. |
| Information and Communication Technologies | Became the first and only airport in Canada to include sign language boarding messaging on all gate information display screens, while also improving the contrast on flight information display screens throughout YVR to make it easier for guests to find information about their flight status. |
| Communication | Expanded video translation service capabilities through the introduction of additional iPads so YVR teams can support guests who communicate in other languages, including American Sign Language (ASL). |
| Procurement of Goods, Services and Facilities | Continued our accessibility-focused approach to procurement, following universal design guidelines. |
| Design and Delivery of Programs and Services | Launched our Curbside Greeting Program to enhance the experience for all guests, including those requiring assistance with wheelchairs, mobility aids, navigation, or sighted guidance. |
| Transportation | Introduced a new design to ensure our accessible passenger drop off areas are easily identified (vinyl wraps on curbside bollards). |
| Consultations | Engaged with community partners both online and in-person and held monthly terminal working group meetings gaining new insights on disability-related trends. |
| Employment | Opened Paper Planes Café, a first-of-its kind food and beverage area that provides inclusive employment opportunities for neurodivergent individuals with a diverse range of abilities. |
