North Runway News - December edition
North Runway News
Welcome to the North Runway News, our bi-monthly newsletter that provides information about what’s happening with our North Runway Modernization Program. This second installment includes an update on early works that began in October and what is next for the program.
What we’ve been up to:
Since October, crews have been advancing early works, which includes upgrading the edge light conduit system and replacing light cans with newer models.
The edge light conduit system supports runway lighting and protects the electrical wiring that connects the edge lights, which are essential for illuminating the sides of the runway to ensure safe operations, especially during low visibility operations. This month, crews were able to complete edge light work outside of critical areas. Crews will continue to advance edge light work on all remaining areas in the coming months.

Work will continue through December and into the new year to replace old runway light cans with newer models. Light cans are used to house and protect the runway lighting system by providing structural support, protection from weather and easy access for maintenance.

What’s next:
In the coming months, crews will begin work on the construction laydown area, both airside and groundside. The work will be complete during daytime construction hours. Crews working airside will stay outside of the runway safety environment, allowing work to take place during daily North Runway operations.
Planning for the start of paving work, currently scheduled to begin in April 2025, is ongoing. This includes close collaboration with our contractors to coordinate construction with operations, security and traffic management.
Safety and security are our top priorities.
Crews will be conducting readiness exercises to finalize all aspects of construction and paving in advance of the work commencing to ensure safety and efficiency.
