The familiar boarding ritual unfolds at gates around the world: passengers line up, reach for passports and boarding passes, and wait their turn to be verified before stepping onto the aircraft. But at YVR, that experience is evolving. Increasingly, travellers can move through the boarding process simply by presenting themselves—no need for documents or mobile devices—thanks to a growing suite of digital identity and biometric technologies.
Through strategic partnerships and continued investment in innovation, YVR is redefining how identity verification works at the airport, making travel more seamless while maintaining strong privacy and choice for passengers.
Digital identity at the gate
One of the cornerstones of this transformation is Air Canada’s Digital Identification, Digital ID, program. Available to eligible Air Canada passengers on select domestic flights, the program allows travellers who have enrolled in advance to verify their identity at the gate using facial recognition technology.
Instead of presenting a boarding pass and government-issued identification, enrolled passengers step up to a camera at the eGate to confirm their identity in seconds. The result is a faster and more streamlined boarding experience.
Participation in Digital ID is entirely optional and consent-based. Travellers choose whether to enroll and provide confirmation on the day of travel. For those who prefer a traditional boarding experience, manual verification using paper or mobile boarding passes and identification remains available.
Behind the scenes, YVR and Air Canada worked closely to bring Digital ID to life from redesigning gate areas, integrating systems, and ensuring Guest Experience team members are ready to support passengers as they navigate this new option.
Biometric boarding for U.S.-bound flights
Building on the success of Digital ID, YVR has expanded biometric technology to our U.S. preclearance environment.
In partnership with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Air Canada, and Transport Canada, YVR is the first Canadian airport to offer biometric boarding for passengers travelling to the United States using CBP’s Traveller Verification Service (TVS). The technology is available at select U.S. departure gates and enables passengers to complete the boarding process by briefly looking into a camera within the eGate.
TVS works by comparing a live photo taken at the gate with images already associated with a traveller’s travel documents, allowing identity to be confirmed in seconds after customs clearance. For eligible passengers, the system becomes the default boarding method, while travellers who prefer not to use biometrics can opt out and be processed manually by a gate agent.
All personal data used in TVS is encrypted and securely managed within CBP’s system, reinforcing the importance of privacy and data protection throughout the traveller journey.
As regulatory approvals expand, additional airline adoption is anticipated, and YVR is investing in the installation of biometric technology across all U.S. departure gates.
