YVR wins Uber’s 2024 Airport Sustainability Award

At YVR, sustainability is at the heart of how we operate, and we are committed to finding innovative ways to reduce emissions while continuing to provide seamless transportation options for travellers. That’s why we are proud to accept the 2024 Airport Sustainability Award from Uber, recognizing our shared efforts to promote the use of Hybrid and Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) at the airport.

This achievement acknowledges YVR’s commitment to driving forward initiatives that help our partners reduce their carbon emissions. As rideshare services continue to grow in popularity, we are working closely with partners like Uber to implement policies that incentivize greener transportation choices.

A shift toward sustainability in ride hailing

The demand for rideshare services at YVR has increased over the past few years. More trips can mean a rise in emissions - especially with gasoline-powered vehicles - YVR is looking to address this challenge head on by encouraging the use of low and zero emission vehicles. YVR has introduced new fee structures that make sustainable choices like ZEVs and hybrid vehicles more accessible and attractive to travellers. Recently we implemented lower per-trip fees for ZEV and hybrid rideshare services, ensuring that fares for these options are comparable to or slightly lower than their non-green counterparts. Now, passengers leaving YVR can choose a greener option and save on fares.

A commitment to a more sustainable future

These changes represent an important step in aligning ground transportation at YVR with our broader climate commitments, and the ridesharing community agrees. Uber recognized our work and commitment by awarding YVR the 2024 Sustainability Award is a testament of that work. By incentivizing the use of Hybrid and ZEVs, investing in EV infrastructure, and supporting our rideshare partners in their sustainability journeys, we are making meaningful progress toward a cleaner and greener future.
