Sports and Aviation: How Your Favourite Team Travels

Ever wondered how professional sports teams travel through their busy seasons and never miss a game time?

Whether it’s chartered aircraft, private, commercial or somewhere in between, some of your favourite professional teams fly tens of thousands a miles per season to get to their next game. With thousands of pounds of equipment, support staff, and a strict schedule to follow, how do they do it?

Here at YVR, our most frequent passengers are undoubtedly the Vancouver Canucks. With over 40+ games on the road per year stretching across North America, the team relies on Air Canada’s chartered division, Air Canada Jetz, to get the team where they need to go.

Operating out of the south side of the YVR airfield, players go through a separate security screening and head onto the tarmac straight to their aircraft.

The recently refurbished Air Canada Jetz aircraft are equipped with 58-70 business class reclining seats designed for maximum comfort on long road-trips. Air Canada Jetz has even designed a special all-black livery to show off these incredible aircraft. Once in the air, teams can expect to find custom food offerings and amenities tailored to the needs of high performing athletes, making for a truly top-notch experience. Other local teams such as the BC Lions and Vancouver Whitecaps have similar agreements and charters with other carriers.

Some teams take things a step further by purchasing, owning, and flying their own private aircraft. This setup is particularly popular in the NFL given the far greater number of staff and size of the operation that must move from city to city. The New England Patriots famously own and fly their own Boeing 767 in their classic red, white, and blue colours.
