Community Response to Year Two Progress Report on Beyond Accessibility
Consultation and collaboration with our community partners is a cornerstone of YVR’s longstanding efforts to provide a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible travel experience for everyone.
We are grateful to our community partners who help us evolve our services and develop new programs that make travel better for all.
YVR’s Year Two Accessibility Report reflects a strong commitment to inclusion and a recognizes that accessibility goes beyond just removing physical barriers. The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is proud to have partnered with YVR in the design and implementation of their Accessibility Plan – it has been a meaningful journey grounded in listening, innovation and a shared belief in creating inclusive and supportive environments. Together, we have worked to make the air travel experience more welcoming to all, especially people living with dementia and their care partners. This report reflects not only the progress made but reaffirms our shared commitment to designing spaces and services that are compassionate, accessible and inclusive – a vital step forward in shaping the future of dementia-friendly.
Over the second year of the YVR accessibility plan, remarkable strides have been made towards ensuring accessibility for the sight loss community, particularly through breaking barriers to independent wayfinding," says Tommy Leung, Manager of Advocacy and Stakeholder Operations for British Columbia/Yukon, CNIB. YVR has consistently delivered meaningful access for people with disabilities in all areas of facility design and operation since its inception. Minimizing barriers across all YVR facilities has resulted in local and international recognition of YVR’s leadership role in developing a terminal environment that is inclusive of all users. YVR’s Year 2 Progress Report demonstrates a clear commitment to maintain this leadership role over the long term for people of all ages and abilities.
It is very exciting to see the suggestions given to YVR come to fruition. I always took pride in that we have one of the nicest airports in the world, now that I am part of the disability community, I am also proud that we are becoming more inclusive for everyone. Flying can be stressful, so having more barriers removed makes the experience that much better!

For over 10 years, we have partnered with YVR to create events and resources that make air travel more accessible for the autism community. Our partnered airport tours have impacted hundreds, while resources available year-round have reached thousands more. YVR has been a true champion for inclusion -- we look forward to many more years of creating a positive impact together!
