YVR Upgrades to Neutrality Level of Airport Carbon Accreditation

An aerial view of YVR

We’re thrilled to announce that YVR has successfully achieved Neutrality in the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program by Airports Council International (ACI). YVR is the first Canadian airport certified at this level and joins 60 other airports from around the world at this level of certification.

YVR has been participating in the Airport Carbon Accreditation program since 2016, starting off with Reduction certification. Over the years, we have been working our way through the different levels and are looking to advance further in the program in the future. By achieving Neutrality, we have not only demonstrated that we are reducing our emissions, but also that YVR is carbon neutral through offsetting residual emissions under our control with high quality and verified carbon credits. We are proud to have achieved this with the purchase of carbon offsets for direct, indirect, and corporate travel emissions from the Darkwoods Forest Offset Project, located in B.C. We could not have achieved this certification without the support of our airport community.

About the Program

Established in 2009, Airport Carbon Accreditation is the only institutionally-endorsed, global carbon management certification program for airports. As of 2020, there are over 300 airports in more than 70 countries who actively participate in this program by demonstrating their efforts in reducing carbon emissions. YVR Environmental Management Plan and Commitment to Net Zero

At YVR, sustainability is at the core of everything we do. To create a greener and more resilient future, we will be net zero by 2030. YVR supports ACI World’s recently announced Long Term Carbon Goal and celebrates the commitment made by the global airport community to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Our 2020-2024 Environmental Management Plan provides the framework for how we will achieve this, along with our other environmental goals to divert waste from landfill, increase water efficiency, and enhance ecosystem health on Sea Island.
