YVR aglow with new energy efficient lighting

Throughout our terminal, we’ve upgraded more than 20,000 lights with new LED bulbs.

This upgrade is expected to decrease electricity use by 2.8 gigawatt hours per year, which is the equivalent of powering 255 B.C. homes. Not only does our new LED lighting improve energy efficiency and help advance our environmental goals, but it also provides enhanced ambiance that our passengers and workers will enjoy as they move throughout the terminal.

At YVR, we’re committed to becoming the world’s greenest airport and shared our Roadmap to Net Zero Carbon 2030, accelerating our original climate commitment by 20 years. Our lighting efficiency project is among the first to be completed under our Roadmap.

At YVR, fostering and facilitating partnerships that align with our sustainability commitments is a priority. We’re therefore proud to partner with BC Hydro who supported our lighting efficiency goals by investing into this $1.5 million dollar energy conservation project. With the investment from BC Hydro, this project is expected to pay itself off in just over three years.

June is Indigenous History Month and marks the five-year anniversary of our Sustainability & Friendship Agreement with Musqueam. For the Lighting Efficiency project, we’re proud to partner with Delta Tritec Group, a Musqueam owned and operated construction firm, as part of YVR’s commitment to create sustainable business opportunities for our Musqueam friends. Working with our Musqueam partners on this project has great meaning as we advance our shared goal of protecting the local environment by addressing climate change.

As we celebrate World Environment Day on June 5th, we’d like to offer a few tips to lower your carbon footprint as a passenger:

  • When coming to our airport, consider using public transit
  • When booking, choose direct flights to your destination where possible
  • Consider purchasing carbon offsets for your flight through your airline
