“I was a member of the Manila International Airport folk dance team when I was in elementary school. I got to perform on the tarmac when foreign leaders would come to visit. Fast forward 40 years, and now I'm the one that’s being welcomed in my hometown.” 

Economic benefits for Canada 

Air Canada’s inaugural flight from YVR to Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) took off on April 2, 2025. Since then, more than 100,000 passengers have travelled on one of the four weekly flights, and 2,500 tonnes of cargo have been transported. 

The flight from Vancouver to Manila is delivering major economic benefits. Air Canada’s route out of YVR is estimated to generate $24.7 million in economic output, a $127 million boost to GDP, and the creation of 135 jobs across the ecosystem. Each new flight connecting YVR to the Asia–Pacific region strengthens our position as Canada’s gateway to Asia and creates opportunities to get more local products to global markets.  

Strengthening cultural ties 

For the 174,000+ people of Filipino descent living in British Columbia, Air Canada’s direct service makes it easier to connect with friends and relatives.  

“The majority of my family is in the Philippines,” says Macy Yap, a passenger on one of Air Canada’s direct YVR–Manila flights in February 2026. “When I didn’t have a baby, I would take whatever flight to get to a destination, even if it was one or two stopovers. Now I have a two-year-old. It made a pretty big difference not to have to get back off the plane and board another plane. It saves so much time.” 

The flight also benefits the Filipino community across the rest of North America. “I’ve had passengers [on this flight] coming home to the Philippines from New Jersey, North Carolina, California...” says Del Rosario. 

The in-flight meal provides a preview of the Filipino cuisine passengers will find in Manila. “To be on board a flight where people get to eat the food that we love to eat back home is something that I celebrate,” says Del Rosario. 

“I was pretty impressed with the food,” says Yap. “A pork coconut curry dish, cold noodle salad... every meal I had was good.” 

A warm and welcoming destination 

For Yap, the trip provided a welcome opportunity for her to catch up with family, including meeting her brother’s two-month-old baby, and to visit Manila’s beautiful beaches together. 

For tourists, the reasons to visit are equally compelling. “From the minute you arrive, you’ll want to come back,” says Del Rosario, citing the warm hospitality, beautiful islands and beaches, impressive dive sites, and delicious cuisine. 

“Everything is accessible within the airport area, from accommodations and food to history and tourism. And on the outskirts, you can find beautiful resorts, hot springs, home-style cooking, tropical fruit . . . You’ll fall in love with everything Manila and the country have to offer.”

Back in 1983, Vancouver was the airline’s first North American gateway, chosen when Cathay Pacific launched its inaugural long‑haul passenger service to the continent. What began as two weekly non‑stop flights to Hong Kong on a Boeing 747‑200 has grown during peak season into a robust schedule of 17 weekly non‑stop flights between our two cities. Since that first flight 43 years ago, over 14 million passengers have flown on Cathay Pacific to and from YVR.  

The partnership extends to supporting the economy through the movement of goods. Hong Kong consistently ranks among the airport’s most important global cargo destinations, and in 2024 it was YVR’s fourth‑largest export market. Cathay Pacific itself contributed more than 2.3 million kilograms of cargo carried from YVR to Hong Kong that year, supporting supply chains and businesses across the Lower Mainland.

Cathay Pacific’s history at YVR mirrors the airport’s growth as an international hub—expanding routes, modernizing facilities, and strengthening connections that support tourism, trade, and cultural ties.

Vancouver welcomed Cathay Pacific more than 40 years ago. Today, YVR once again becomes the place where a global celebration touches down first—honouring the past, elevating the present, and setting the stage for the future of travel as Canada’s Pacific gateway to Asia and beyond.

This new flight from YVR to Japan’s Hokkaido region takes off on December 17, 2026, making it the only non-stop service between Sapporo and North America. The three-times weekly service will run seasonally until March 2027.

By adding Sapporo to its global network, Air Canada is strengthening its connections through Vancouver. This move also supports YVR’s strategy as a major Trans-Pacific hub and will enhance the deep trade, economic, and cultural ties between Canada and Japan.

Flights will operate from YVR to Sapporo’s Chitose Hokkaido Airport (CTS) onboard Air Canada’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner, including seats in Signature Class, Premium Economy and Economy.

Every new route departing from YVR results in increased economic activity and jobs for our region. The new service to Sapporo is expected to generate $6 million in economic output, $3 million in GDP, and 33 full time jobs across the province.

Throughout 2025, the North Runway Program team delivered major upgrades to lighting, drainage and electrical systems, and paved a 210mm asphalt overlay, all while keeping the runway operational during the day by performing work during the runway’s existing eight-hour nightly closure period. With the North Runway returning to full service levels as planned in October, we’re looking back on our final stage of the program – commissioning.  

While paving marked a major milestone in the program, with over 130,000 work hours, the activity did not stop there. In the fifth and final installment of our North Runway video series, follow along the busiest phase of the program – testing and commissioning the runway back to full service. 

Commissioning was the final step of the North Runway Program to ensure all systems are performing as required, from lighting to navigational aids for pilots, before the runway can return to full CAT II/III service. A full level of service ensures the runway can support safe and reliable operations in all weather conditions to meet the needs of our community and the economy that supports it.

In our latest episode of the North Runway video series, learn more about our airfield operations and how teams work each day to ensure safety and security during construction and a successful return to service each day. 

The work is highly complex, stretching across a vast footprint and requiring precise coordination. Preparation has been years in the making, and every evening the airfield becomes a thoughtfully orchestrated construction site. 

To ensure a safe and timely return to service, planning begins well before sundown. Each day includes a series of meetings to determine whether the night’s shift is a “go” or “no-go,” weighing weather conditions, staffing, and scope of work. Throughout the shift, check-ins keep every element of the project on track. 

By dawn, the airfield is inspected in detail by our Airfield Safety Officers who are checking for foreign object debris, verifying lighting and ensuring nothing can interfere with aircraft before returning the runway to service for the day.

You may see activity at various locations in our terminal, on the airfield between approximately 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. There will be exercise participants and volunteers looking distressed or injured in the terminal. Participants will all be clearly identified with vests, name tags or YVR baseball caps. If you see them, don’t be alarmed! Having actors helps our airport staff and emergency responders fine tune their training. Signs will also be posted around the airport alerting passengers to the exercise.

Hosting full-scale exercises is a key part of YVR’s Emergency Management Plan, as required by Transport Canada. By simulating emergency situations, we’re able to better prepare for the unlikely event of a real-life emergency at YVR.

Airport operations will not be affected by this exercise.

Weather is one of the most significant factors when it comes to flight operations. And while our summer weather lasted well into September this year, fall weather is right around the corner, bringing with it increased rain, occasional fog, and lowered cloud ceilings.  

Because safety is our top priority, conditions like heavy rain, fog, and wind that lead to lower visibility at the airport require our YVR teams to be flexible and responsive.  

In the simplest terms, visibility refers to how well and how far you can see around you. In aviation, visibility is measured based on how far away a pilot can see and recognize the runway. This is called Runway Visual Range (RVR). Reduced visibility operations (RVOP) kick in when pilots can only see the runway or runway lights from a distance of 2,640 feet or less. To put that into perspective, that’s like standing at BC Place and judging whether you can see Science World across False Creek. Low visibility operations (LVOP) are triggered when visibility drops to below 1,320 feet or the equivalent of about four Vancouver city blocks. 

Like most major airports, YVR has specialized procedures and the latest aviation technology to help keep aircraft moving safely and getting you on your way even in reduced visibility or low visibility situations. We also work closely with NAV CANADA, the country’s air navigation service provider, to adjust the rate of arrivals and departures when needed. Just as drivers allow more space between them and the vehicle ahead in inclement weather, the same goes for aircraft. As a result, fewer planes may be able to land or takeoff per hour in reduced and low visibility conditions. This may cause delays or other impacts to flight schedules. 

However, when visibility drops below 600 feet, or when lightning is detected in the immediate vicinity of the airport, safety dictates that take-offs and landings may need to be paused until conditions improve. This is known as a ground stop. These are rare, but when they do happen, please know they are for your safety and that of your fellow passengers, workers, and crew. 

So, as we bid goodbye to summer weather and get ready for fall, we recommend passengers always check the status of their flight with their airline or on yvr.ca before arriving at the airport, and to give themselves plenty of time to get to the airport safely in the event of inclement weather.

At YVR, sustainability is at the heart of how we operate, and we are committed to finding innovative ways to reduce emissions while continuing to provide seamless transportation options for travellers. That’s why we are proud to accept the 2024 Airport Sustainability Award from Uber, recognizing our shared efforts to promote the use of Hybrid and Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) at the airport.

This achievement acknowledges YVR’s commitment to driving forward initiatives that help our partners reduce their carbon emissions. As rideshare services continue to grow in popularity, we are working closely with partners like Uber to implement policies that incentivize greener transportation choices.

A shift toward sustainability in ride hailing

The demand for rideshare services at YVR has increased over the past few years. More trips can mean a rise in emissions - especially with gasoline-powered vehicles - YVR is looking to address this challenge head on by encouraging the use of low and zero emission vehicles. YVR has introduced new fee structures that make sustainable choices like ZEVs and hybrid vehicles more accessible and attractive to travellers. Recently we implemented lower per-trip fees for ZEV and hybrid rideshare services, ensuring that fares for these options are comparable to or slightly lower than their non-green counterparts. Now, passengers leaving YVR can choose a greener option and save on fares.

A commitment to a more sustainable future

These changes represent an important step in aligning ground transportation at YVR with our broader climate commitments, and the ridesharing community agrees. Uber recognized our work and commitment by awarding YVR the 2024 Sustainability Award is a testament of that work. By incentivizing the use of Hybrid and ZEVs, investing in EV infrastructure, and supporting our rideshare partners in their sustainability journeys, we are making meaningful progress toward a cleaner and greener future.

As we continue to evolve and refine our approach to sustainable ground transportation, we look forward to working with our partners and travelling public to create a travel experience that is both efficient and environmentally responsible.

While air travel is at the heart of what we do, the world’s best airports and transportation hubs do more than move only people and goods by air—they are intermodal. YVR is committed to advancing the integration of multiple forms of transportation, including improving traffic flow. New AI-powered sensor technology, developed by Vancouver-based MistyWest, will help us to do just that.

MistyWest’s proprietary MistyVision technology will enable the classification of 13 distinct vehicle types prioritized by the Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MOTT). The resulting insights and information will help inform the future design of a Moray Bridge replacement and other roadway infrastructure projects.

Additionally, this technological solution aims to provide more reliable data for Scope 3 carbon emissions reporting, trend forecasting, and ongoing up-to-date data on select transportation corridors within Sea Island, reflecting our commitment to sustainability, innovation, and our role as a globally competitive gateway.

Our work with MistyWest is taking place through the Integrated Marketplace. YVR was the first testbed for this initiative, which is delivered by Innovate B.C. and allows us to support the development and implementation of made-in-B.C. solutions that benefit YVR, our community, and local businesses.

Situated in the Domestic Arrivals area on Level 2, Paper Planes Café is more than just a place to grab a coffee—it’s a space where inclusion takes flight. Open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., the café employs individuals on the autism spectrum, providing them with paid, hands-on experience and the opportunity to develop valuable skills in a real-world work environment.

Through this café, YVR and PAFN offer up to six months of training, covering essential skills and expertise typical of the restaurant and service industry. This includes barista talents, food preparation, and customer service, all designed to prepare graduates for a successful career in the hospitality field.  Upon completing the program, graduates are supported in their job search within the community—equipped with confidence, experience, and new professional connections.

Since opening in 2023, the café has become a vibrant part of the terminal and a symbol of what inclusive employment can achieve. To date, Paper Planes Café has served over 36,000 cups of coffee to travellers and airport employees alike —each one prepared with care and pride by its dedicated team.

Among those team members are TJ and Rahma, two remarkable graduates whose stories reflect the impact of this program. Check their stories below.

YVR is committed to creating a more accessible and inclusive airport, and our partnership with PAFN is a powerful example of how we can work together to uplift our community and open doors to meaningful opportunities.

1. We remain committed to reaching net zero by 2030 and helping decarbonize aviation industry by 2050.
In alignment with our strategic lens on climate, YVR remains committed to achieving net zero operational emissions by 2030. We’ve been carbon neutral since 2020 and continue to reduce emissions through building upgrades, clean energy investments, and electric vehicle adoption. Our work to decarbonize the industry over the coming years will touch on energy planning, land development, aviation emissions and inter-modal transportation planning – and will inform the prioritization of capital investment.

2. We’re setting an ambitious target for zero-waste by 2040 for our main terminal
Zero-waste is defined as 90% diversion from landfill. While this might feel like a new and challenging goal, we know that well over 80% of the materials leaving the terminal today are divertible. Through our work on decarbonization and energy, we understand how important it is to build from a strong foundation to achieve success. Which is why over the next three years, we will develop a detailed action plan to achieve zero waste by 2040, or sooner, that will integrate into our 2025-2027 Strategy.

3. We’re protecting heritage and deepening relationships.
Sea Island is the traditional, unceded territory of the Musqueam people. Our plan reflects our commitment to reconciliation through strengthened archaeological protection, cultural competency training, and ongoing collaboration. We’re also creating job and mentorship opportunities in heritage conservation for Musqueam members.

4. We’re preparing for climate change—today.
Rising sea levels, extreme weather, and heatwaves are no longer future risks—they’re present-day realities. Our adaptation efforts include upgraded dikes, climate-resilient infrastructure, and low-visibility airfield enhancements. We’re also conducting a full bio-inventory of Sea Island to identify species and habitats that are at risk from climate change.

5. We can do this - together.
Our Environmental Sustainability Plan outlines our priorities for the environment, which are aligned with our 2025 – 2027 Strategy. As we work to deliver on our purpose of serving the community and economy that supports it, we are looking ahead with a heightened sense of responsibility to reduce the impact of our operations on the environment and take a leadership role in shaping a greener and more resilient future.

This year also marks a significant milestone in our commitment to this issue—YVR’s first anniversary as a member of the Human Trafficking Prevention Network of British Columbia. In addition, we continue to build on our partnership with Not In My City, which began in November 2023, reinforcing our dedication to raising awareness, training employees, and collaborating with key stakeholders to disrupt human trafficking networks.

Human trafficking remains one of the fastest-growing crimes in Canada, disproportionately affecting individuals under 25, as well as Indigenous and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. With traffickers frequently exploiting transportation corridors, airports have a critical role to play in disrupting these networks and supporting prevention efforts.

• Over the past year, YVR has taken significant steps in this fight:
• 78% of our employees have completed training to recognize the signs of human trafficking at the airport.
• In June 2024, we hosted a Lunch and Learn on Human Trafficking Awareness with Vincent Ng from Be Amazing, shedding light on the issue’s impact in Richmond.
• Throughout the summer, our Seeing Yellow campaign featured digital signage and stickers at Info Counters, while 15% of YVR fleet vehicles—along with 100% of AB Coast and Securiguard Core Vehicles—displayed Not In My City's yellow rose stickers as a sign of solidarity.
• On July 30, World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, YVR marked the occasion by lighting the tower yellow and launching a donation-matching campaign for YVR Cares Socks, raising $1,994 for the cause.
• As part of the UN’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, we hosted a Lunch & Learn for WestJet staff at YVR in December.

“The more awareness we bring to the issue of human trafficking, the harder it is for traffickers to hurt victims. Empowered individuals will not be trafficked because they are less vulnerable,” said Rosanna Imbrogno, Vice-President Operations at Not In My City. “YVR’s commitment to training staff and engaging with the broader network is making a tangible difference in strengthening prevention efforts.”

Human trafficking is a complex issue that requires collective action. At YVR, we are committed to playing our part by raising awareness, supporting prevention efforts, and working alongside our partners to disrupt trafficking networks. But everyone has a role to play. By recognizing the signs of human trafficking and knowing how to report concerns, we can all help protect vulnerable individuals.

In February 2024, we welcomed nearly 310,000 travellers, many of whom enjoyed the festivities held at YVR to mark this important occasion. Among the main destinations were Hong Kong, Taipei, Incheon, Shanghai, Narita, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Vietnam. This year, we are excited to continue the tradition and look forward to the festivities ahead.

Teachings from the Wood Snake: strategic growth in cargo

In 2025, the Chinese Lunar New Year falls on January 29, marking the start of the Year of the Wood Snake. Celebrated for 15 days, the Wood Snake is associated with wisdom, intuition, and strategic growth—qualities that resonate deeply with YVR's mission. The Wood Snake’s energy encourages us to look ahead with careful planning, adaptability, and a focus on long-term success, all of which are core elements of YVR's commitment to excellence. Just as the Snake sheds its skin to evolve, YVR continues to adapt and grow, ensuring we meet the evolving needs of our passengers, partners, and communities.

This evolution is reflected in our efforts to connect local businesses with major markets in Asia, supporting the local economy and fostering meaningful relationships that benefit consumers and companies on both sides of the globe.

During this season, an incredible volume of seafood makes its way through our airport. The time leading up to Chinese New Year is traditionally one of the busiest periods for seafood exports to Asia, along with the summer season. In 2024, YVR facilitated the export of approximately 18,000 tonnes of seafood, with crab leading the way as the number one export commodity. These shipments connect British Columbia’s seafood industry to destinations across Asia, including China, Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong, ensuring fresh, high-quality seafood is part of Lunar New Year celebrations worldwide.

Lion dance and other activities at the terminal

But it’s not just about cargo—the festivity extends into the heart of our terminal, bringing the community together while celebrating diversity and strengthening relationships. From January 27 to 31, YVR will host a series of exciting activations to share the joy of the Lunar New Year with passengers and guests.

A highlight will be a Lion Dance performance on January 29 at 11:15 a.m. at The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe, where the celebratory energy will come to life in full color and motion. Passengers can also enjoy Lunar New Year-themed photo opportunities at custom wood snake photo stations, available on January 28 and 30. Additionally, Jetside Bar at Fairmont Hotel will be offering a special Lunar New Year dining menu from January 28 to 31, featuring BBQ pork buns, shrimp spring rolls, and mushroom dumplings served with soy sauce and sweet chili sauce for $24.00.

Other activations during this period will include:

• Lunar New Year-themed décor
• Limited edition $8 YVR Bucks in a special Year of the Snake design, redeemable at participating retailers
• Bubble Waffle Café—YVR’s newest Cantonese-style food and beverage outlet
• Market-style pop-up (post-security for international departures only)
• Purdy's chocolate gold coins distributed in the International Terminal (post-security)

For over 14 years, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Quest Outreach Society have worked hand in hand to make the holiday season a little brighter for families facing food insecurity. This ongoing partnership is built on a shared commitment to supporting our community and ensuring that everyone has access to fresh, nutritious food—especially during the holidays.

Following the success of our Annual Hamper Drive hosted on December 13—where we helped feed nearly 10,000 British Columbians—YVR employees once again joined forces with Quest this past week to assemble and distribute even more hampers to families in need, just in time for the holidays.

On December 20, a team of volunteers from YVR and Quest came together to fill another 200 hampers with festive essentials, including antibiotic-free and halal-certified turkeys, fresh local produce (onions, carrots, potatoes, beets, and mandarin oranges), gravy, chicken stock, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and a sweet holiday treat. These hampers, distributed in Burnaby, Surrey, and other locations across the Lower Mainland, represent more than just meals—they’re a symbol of care, dignity, and hope, showcasing the power of community and purpose that defines the longstanding YVR-Quest partnership.

This initiative wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of volunteers who lend their time, energy, and compassion year after year. As Ivan Tse, Manager of YVR’s Guest Experience team and a experienced volunteer, put it:

“I think the work that Quest does is so important. Everyone should have an opportunity to share a good meal with loved ones during the holidays. And the way the airport community comes together for this event is truly inspiring. It’s about taking action to help others, not just words or good intentions.”

For Oge Moss, Environmental Analyst at YVR and a returning Quest volunteer, the experience holds deep meaning:

“I love volunteering and giving back to our community. It is a passion of mine, and I try to encourage others on my team to participate with me when they can. Quest is one of my favorite organizations to volunteer for because food is essential to all of us, and this partnership is a beautiful way to provide this need to those who face challenges affording the high costs of food. This time, I had the honor of distributing hampers and meeting the recipients, bringing joy to their holiday season with a hamper full of healthy, delicious food. It’s an experience I will always cherish.”

Rose, a Quest client, offered a heartfelt reminder of the life-changing impact these initiatives can have on individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. Her story underscores the importance of compassion, community, and the shared effort to bring hope and dignity to those in need.

“My husband lost his job, and as we’re in our late 50s and early 60s, we found ourselves facing food insecurity. A neighbour mentioned Quest to us, and it has been life-changing. Events like the Annual Hamper Drive help destigmatize people who need food banks and food markets. I’m so grateful for the volunteers, staff, donors, and partners—I will keep them in my heart. This support reduces anxiety and brings happiness to people like us.”

The impact of these efforts extends far beyond the holiday season. Quest Outreach Society plays a vital role in the community, providing accessible, affordable food through its non-profit grocery markets and partnerships with local organizations. YVR is proud to support Quest with a $65,000 donation this year, further enabling their work to reduce food insecurity and uplift families across British Columbia.

We’re grateful for everyone who continues to make this partnership a success—our volunteers, partners, donors, and the Quest team. Together, we’re filling tables and hearts with hope, one hamper at a time.

Assistance starts at the curb

Through our Curbside Greeting Program, travellers are welcomed even before they enter our terminal by our Guest Experience team. These team members are available outside along the curb and Canada Line SkyTrain platform to assist with baggage carts, directions, and accessibility requests such as wheelchair or mobility assistance. Our Guest Experience members will assist travellers with getting to their check-in counter or designated area, ensuring a smooth transition.

Accessibility features inside the terminal

The December holiday period is a particularly busy time with a lot of additional activities and decorations in the terminal. We have a number of amenities available to help people of all abilities navigate the airport:

• Assisted change rooms: Our International Terminal features a change room designed to meet the needs of passengers with physical disabilities. It includes a height-adjustable changing bench, a hoist system, and an accessible toilet with a privacy screen.
• Quiet areas and reflective spaces: These include a Quiet Area (Gate D67) and a yoga space. A multi-faith prayer room is also available and welcomes all visitors wanting to take a moment for quiet contemplation amid what can feel like the seasonal travel rush. These spaces cater to sensory overstimulation and encourage moments of reflection.
• Support to service animals and companion pets; To meet accessibility needs, YVR has a number of animal relief areas for service animals and small pets.
• Our Less Airport Stress Initiative (LASI) brings trained therapy dogs into the terminals, helping reduce feelings of anxiety. These dogs and their handlers receive specialized training to support neurodiverse passengers and work in partnership with organizations such as Pacific Autism Family Network.
• The Sunflower Program helps airport staff identify and assist individuals with hidden disabilities, such as anxiety disorders or chronic pain. Lanyards are available at YVR’s Information Counters and serve as a discreet signal that they may require additional assistance or understanding. 

Enhanced communication and technology

We have a number of communications services available to ensure information can be shared with travellers in a timely and easy to understand manner.

• Sign language video boarding messages: Displayed in American Sign Language (ASL)/Langue des signes du Québec (LSQ), and International Sign on all gate information screens, complementing existing audio and visual announcements.
• Enhanced paging: New digital controls improve sound quality and allow targeted announcements in specific areas of the terminal, ensuring clarity for all.
• Support for hearing loss: Hearing loops are present at all information counters, visual paging, and sign language displays enhance accessibility.
• Language video interpretation: Our language line video interpretation service offers over 240 languages to translate information and instructions for travellers.
• Independent navigation through the airport: For travellers who are blind or partially sighted, YVR offers free and unlimited access to Aira, a visual interpretation app that enhances independence and navigation within the airport. Our terminals also feature contrasting floor tiles to guide those with visual impairments.
• Travel Rehearsal Program: We offer personalized support through this program for passengers with disabilities or diverse needs.
• Facial recognition for seamless boarding: Passengers flying with Air Canada can use Digital Identification, a facial recognition technology, to breeze through boarding without needing boarding passes or ID checks. This innovation streamlines the process while supporting accessibility by reducing physical handling and simplifying the travel experience for everyone.

Commitment to accessibility

YVR’s commitment goes beyond amenities. Staff and partners, including Green Coat volunteers, the Richmond RCMP, Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (USCBP), and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), have undergone neurodiverse inclusion training. These sessions focus on best practices to ensure a welcoming, safe, and supportive journey for all passengers.

As part of the festive season, YVR is unveiling several holiday activities across the airport. 

And yes, visitors to Vancouver Aquarium at YVR may spot Santa cleaning the tank on December 19 from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. along with a certified dive team.  

That’s probably not enough to satisfy your yuletide cravings, so rest assured YVR’s offering plenty more festive activities throughout the month. 

The Seasons Treatings campaign kicked off December 13, and will see members of YVR’s team gifting cookies and YVR bucks (essentially gift certificates redeemable at YVR’s restaurants and retail shops), as well as kids’ activities (including colouring sheets and crayons for younger guests, and sticker sheets), doggie biscuits from Purebread Bakery, cream whiskey tastings, and more surprises across the terminals in both pre- and post-security areas. 

The Fairmont Vancouver Airport will host a Santa Parade in the pre-security areas of the domestic and international terminals on Level 3 on December 18, between 10:30 a.m. – 12 noon, and on Monday, December 23 (Santa’s schedule is pretty busy at this critical juncture, so stay tuned on the exact time!). 

If you haven’t been able to get your letter sent to Saint Nick, you can search out the Santa Chair in the Fairmont lobby on December 13 and 20, from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. and have a photo taken with the big guy. (Maybe bring your list, too. No guarantees, but if you’ve been good this year, we like your chances.) 

YVR’s Less Airport Stress Initiative (LASI) dogs will also be on duty over the holiday travel season, sharing their comfort and good cheer with travellers, too.  

These trained therapy dogs, courtesy of the St. John’s Ambulance Therapy Dog Program, provide comfort and emotional support to travellers who may be feeling anxious about their journey, adding an extra layer of calm to the YVR experience.  

Keep an eye out for Freya (a friendly, costume-wearing Dachshund), Payton (a blind rescue dog from South Korea), and Boomer (a gentle favorite among kids), just a few of the 14 canine crewmembers. Handlers and dogs receive specialized respectability training to support neurodiverse passengers, and work in partnership with organizations like the Pacific Autism Family Network and Parkinson Society British Columbia. Our LASI team works daily from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

To some, Flanders Fields may evoke a distant memory or the lines of an old poem. But for Stewart Point and Diane Herman, it’s part of a legacy, a memory kept alive across generations. In their family, stories of courage and sacrifice are not only preserved but lived, spoken in the quiet moments and held close in their hearts. This is the story of two people whose roots run deep into a history that many may see as fading, yet for them, remains as vivid as ever.

A Family of Veterans: Courage and Commitment

Scrolling through his phone’s photo gallery, Stewart reflects on the faces and memories that shaped his sense of duty and respect for others. A member of the Information Technology (IT) team at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) since 2019, Stewart speaks warmly of his grandfather, Joseph Pettis, who was drafted in November 1917, just as World War I was nearing its end. Joseph’s service left a lasting impact on Stewart, instilling in him a pride in his heritage and the courage passed down through generations.

But Joseph wasn’t the only one in Stewart’s family who took up the call to protect and serve. His family history reads like a lineage of courage, with uncles, godparents, and grandparents all united by their commitment to safeguarding the future. Their service spans World War I and II, Vietnam, and Korea, where his uncle Archie Williams, who passed away in 1977, served and carefully preserved an impressive collection of artifacts from the Korean War. Though their exact whereabouts today are uncertain, these relics continue to carry the weight of stories of bravery and sacrifice, keeping the memory of those who served alive.

Similarly, Diane Herman, from the Grant family of Musqueam and a member of the YVR team for the past five years, comes from a long line of warriors and holds a similar respect for her late uncle Paul Scotchman, who served as a paratrooper in the Vietnam War. "I always remember him being so proud to have served," Diane shares, recalling his pride in wearing his uniform or veteran’s hat. Due to restrictions, her uncle had to enlist through the United States—a reminder of the unique challenges Indigenous veterans faced simply to serve.

The Hidden Costs: A Legacy of Pride and Pain

Yet, Stewart’s family story isn’t solely about pride. Behind the medals and mementos lie stories of frustration and disappointment. Stewart recalls the disillusionment his family members felt when they returned home from war, often treated as outsiders, overlooked for the benefits other veterans received. Indigenous veterans faced unique barriers— their sacrifices were frequently overshadowed, their contributions diminished in the national narrative.

Remembrance Day, while widely and rightfully celebrated, often eclipses the contributions of Indigenous veterans. Stewart stresses the importance of Indigenous Veterans Day as a time to remember both the fallen and those who survived, returning home to rebuild their communities. Established in 1994, Indigenous Veterans Day acknowledges the sacrifices of as many as 12,000 First Nations, Métis, and Inuit soldiers who served in the major conflicts of the 20th century, with over 500 of them never making it back.

Diane shares this concern and hopes more Canadians will come to understand why Indigenous Veterans Day holds a separate significance. "Every veteran deserves to be honoured and remembered," she says, explaining how she tries to educate her colleagues, friends, and family on the importance of this day.

Contributions Beyond the Battlefield: The Women of War

Stewart’s grandmother, Teresa, like many women during World War II, answered a different call to serve. She traveled to Seattle to work as a welder, constructing more than 75 destroyers that would sail the Pacific. Yet, upon her return, she found herself twice excluded—not only was she overlooked for future work opportunities, but her name was also missing from any formal recognition lists of female welders.

Stewart recalls his mother showing him an old newspaper, her finger tracing over a list of names. "My grandmother’s name was missing,” he says, “even though she had contributed just as much as anyone else.” Then he found her war service record. He pauses, reliving the moment he saw it. The document, one of the few records of her wartime work, bore the word “Caucasian” at the top.

Stewart lets that word hang. “It may seem small,” he reflects, “but it’s a reminder of how they tried to rewrite the story—to erase Indigenous contributions in the fight for freedom and democracy.”

The Urgent Call to Serve: Building a Shared Future

When asked why his family members felt compelled to serve, Stewart answers without hesitation. “They served hoping to help build a future for Canada,” he says. “It’s quite courageous, what they’ve done, fighting with no guarantees of coming back. But they did it because they had a deep belief that we are one country, and we should always be looking out for one another.”

This sense of unity and shared purpose remains central to Stewart’s identity and is something he hopes future generations will continue to value. In his eyes, the fight was not only for Canada’s freedom but for the well-being of Indigenous communities as well, motivations that remain interconnected to this day.

The Power of Language: Cree as a Code of Victory

Little known to many, Indigenous languages played a critical role during WWII. Cree, among other Indigenous languages, was used as a code by Indigenous soldiers in the Canadian Armed Forces to pass secure messages. Stewart reflects on this, explaining how code talkers would send messages in Cree to each other, their words indecipherable to enemy forces.

“Morse code is well-known, but few realize how Cree and other Indigenous languages helped secure victory,” Stewart explains. “Without these languages, it would have been impossible to relay crucial messages on the battlefield.” As we celebrate the UN’s International Decade of Indigenous Languages, which began in 2022, Stewart emphasizes the importance of acknowledging this unique role Indigenous languages played in Canada’s military success.

Honouring Indigenous History and Legacy

Stewart says he commends the government for its commitment to reconciliation and appreciation for Indigenous heritage but admits he’d like to see broader recognition of Indigenous history, language, and contributions. Through his own family’s legacy, he has learned the value of freedom and the need to protect fundamental rights, lessons he hopes will resonate with others.

“Freedom and our fundamental rights are things we’ll always have to fight for because society is constantly evolving. We must remain vigilant because nothing is guaranteed forever,” he says. Stewart hopes that the next generations will carry on his family’s legacy, honouring those who served not just for Canada but for their Indigenous communities.

To Diane, this sense of pride in her family’s history is a reminder that her ancestors’ resilience is something she hopes to pass down. “We can do what we want and find strength in our identity and history,” she says, emphasizing how their legacy of courage guides her and her daughters.

Celebrating Indigenous Veterans Day and Remembrance Day: A Dual Tribute

Each year, Diane and Stewart attend both Indigenous Veterans Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies, paying tribute not only to his family members but to all Indigenous veterans who fought bravely alongside their non-Indigenous counterparts. For years, YVR has commemorated both Indigenous Veterans Day and Remembrance Day, recognizing the unique importance of each occasion and the broader impact these events have on the community. For both colleagues, these ceremonies serve as a meaningful reminder of the shared values and hard-won freedoms that unite us all.

Since 2011, YVR has honored initiatives that range from cutting carbon emissions and reducing waste to improving water use efficiency and supporting local ecosystems. This year, we are excited to announce the 2024 YVR Green Excellence Award winners: Fairmont Vancouver Airport and Purolator Inc.

Both companies have demonstrated long-standing dedication to environmental stewardship and community involvement, making them key partners on our journey toward net zero emissions by 2030.

The awards were presented by YVR's Director of Climate and Environment, Wendy Avis, alongside VP and Chief External Affairs Officer, Mike McNaney, who emphasized the importance of the winners' year-round efforts. McNaney praised the commitments each organization has made, not only to reducing environmental impacts but also to engaging and educating their teams, fostering a more sustainable future for the airport community and beyond.

Award Categories and Winners

Environmental Stewardship Award: Purolator Inc.

Purolator was recognized for the strides taken in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the electrification of its fleet. This year, the company added 53 electric vehicles, bringing the total to 58 out of 122 vehicles, with plans for further expansion. As part of their long-term commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, Purolator continues to invest in clean fuels and innovative low-carbon solutions.

Community Eco-Champion Award: Fairmont Vancouver Airport

Fairmont Vancouver Airport was honored for its efforts to foster sustainability and community engagement. This year, the hotel collected over 50 lbs. of waste materials from YVR loading docks and McDonald Beach and hosted a community thrift shop to promote the circular economy. The Fairmont sustainability team remains actively engaged, sharing creative solutions for tackling environmental challenges across Sea Island.

As of September 4, Checkpoint ABC North has reopened with cutting-edge CATSA Plus Computed Tomography (CT) X-ray equipment, making YVR the first airport in Canada to use this advanced security screening technology.   

YVR invested $30 million to expand and modernize the space with travellers in mind and reflect our commitment to blending functionality with our unique sense of place. With the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority’s (CATSA) new system, travellers can move through security screening without the need to remove liquids, aerosols, gels, or large electronics from their carry-on bags, all while maintaining the highest safety standards and enjoying local art and storytelling. 

Serving passengers travelling through gates A, B, and C, the newly renovated checkpoint reduces congestion during peak hours and gives passengers more flexibility in how they navigate the airport. These enhancements, aimed at reducing wait times and stress, underscore YVR's commitment to creating a smoother, more enjoyable travel experience for everyone. 

YVR worked closely with CATSA to bring this state-of-the-art technology to life, ensuring that passengers experience is as seamless as possible.  

This initiative is a key part of YVR’s ongoing dedication to innovation and leadership in the aviation sector. As the first airport in Canada to adopt this technology, YVR is part of a new standard for airport security, offering travellers both enhanced safety and a more streamlined journey.

The new technology, developed by Vancouver-based A&K Robotics, is designed to provide another option for passengers who may need assistance when travelling through the airport.

At YVR, we are committed to creating an accessible airport for all. The new self-driving pods represent an important step forward for accessibility at the airport, helping ensure people of all ages and abilities can independently navigate our terminals. Whether it’s someone with varying mobility and guidance needs, or someone using crutches, an expectant mother, or whose knees just don’t feel as they used to, these pods will give them more freedom to reach their gates and access airport services with greater independence. 

The main terminal at YVR stands as the single largest building in British Columbia. In our International Terminal alone, it is approximately 650 metres from the security screening checkpoint to the last boarding gate. While there are a number of moving walkways, we are always looking for new and innovative ways to support travellers in making their way to their gate as well as the shops, restaurants and amenities along the way.

The pods have integrated real-time mapping software that enables passengers to accurately and intuitively understand where they are within the airport. Over the coming months, we will be conducting trials with employees, members of the accessibility community and, eventually, travellers. This phased approach will ensure the pods are safely integrated into the airport environment. It also provides an opportunity for our teams to work closely with A&K Robotics to solicit feedback that will help evolve and adapt the form and function of the pods to meet the unique needs of our travellers.

Our work with A&K Robotics is taking place through the Integrated Marketplace. YVR was the first testbed for this initiative, which is delivered by Innovate BC and allows us to support the development and implementation of made-in-B.C. solutions that benefit YVR and our community as well as local businesses.

YVR has a long history of driving innovation and change, within aviation and beyond.

As we look to the future, we are thinking about our role in advancing new energy solutions, reducing carbon emissions, and exploring new innovations that benefit travellers and employees, as well as our community and economy. 

Teams across YVR, from Innovation to Climate and Environment, to Operations and Guest Experience, to Engineering and Commercial Development, are learning from technology and passengers alike to understand the opportunities and challenges and to put in place new approaches at the airport.

We are also working with many industry partners, through our Innovation Hub and in our capacity as a testbed with the Integrated Marketplace, to develop and implement made-in-B.C. solutions that work at our airport and can be applied to other airports and industries.

Many of these solutions are already underway at YVR.

We are working to become net-zero by 2030, which includes decarbonizing the largest building in the province: the Main Terminal at YVR. Following our four decarbonization pathways, we have started design of a geoexchange facility, which will save nearly 4,800 tonnes of carbon annually. We have also replaced and upgraded our heating, cooling and ventilation systems and lighting and hot water systems throughout the terminal.

Our decarbonization pathways extend beyond our terminal, and we are also taking steps to transition our vehicle fleet to electric and hydrogen solutions, advance renewable energy generation, and use renewable natural gas and diesel across our operations.

Many of our climate and environment solutions are powered by new innovations and cleantech.

We are using machine vision to trial camera technology to monitor occupancy in the terminal and send messages to our HVAC system to control settings in real-time to precise needs in order to save energy. We also have a pilot project in place with Moment Energy that leverages end-of-life batteries for additional charging capacity.

Our Digital Twin is another powerful tool for monitoring operations and allowing our teams to identify efficiencies. This includes looking beyond our operations, such as calculating GHGs from aircraft and evaluating airfield routing options to reduce emissions. It also includes visualizing data that is collected from cargo operations to inform future process and infrastructure needs to create green aviation shipping corridors for goods to and from the airport.

While we’re proud of our progress and are confident in our work to achieve our current climate goals, we recognize the future energy needs and are focused on helping create a sustainable path forward, not only for our airport but also for our industry and region.

We recently convened an Energy Advisory Council to provide us with guidance on how to meet our future energy needs and are continuing to work across the aviation industry and other sectors to advance partnerships that are necessary to support future requirements. This includes our work with the Province of BC to complete a Sustainable Aviation Fuel opportunities study and stimulate made-in-B.C. low carbon jet fuel and to look at how we can support all airports in achieving net-zero carbon. It also includes partnering with Airbus and ZeroAvia to study the feasibility of hydrogen infrastructure at YVR, and collaborating with Seattle and Portland airports under the Cascadia Innovation Corridor program.

JetBlue first launched service to JFK from YVR in July 2022, making Vancouver the first and only Canadian destination in JetBlue’s network.  

Flights to JFK with JetBlue Mint operate daily, departing YVR at 10:30 p.m. and arriving in New York at 6:48 a.m.

From airport operations, parking, retail, and food and beverage to security and customs and immigration to airlines and ground handlers to cargo and construction, there are more than 26,000 workers at YVR who help connect B.C. to the world and make our journeys possible. Throughout the day, activities were held across Sea Island to recognize and celebrate these workers.

We were also joined by many of our government colleagues, including M.P. Wilson Miao, M.P. Parm Bains and M.P. Bonita Zarrillo as well as MLAs, Aman Singh, Kelly Greene, Henry Yao and Mable Elmore.

Aviation is the ultimate team sport. As we prepare to welcome 7.8 million travellers during the summer season, from July through September, Airport Workers Day serves as a fitting platform to recognize the contributions of our airport community and the work they accomplish every day to safely and efficiently move what matters and enable YVR to serve our community and the economy that supports it.

The bustling and high-stress atmosphere of airports can be challenging for neurodiverse individuals. To address this concern, YVR, PAFN, and AIDE combined expertise to develop a video series which simulates the travel experience from the curb to cloud. These on-demand videos enable individuals to familiarize themselves with various travel processes, empowering them to approach real travel situations with confidence.

Through our partnership with PAFN and AIDE Canada, YVR is proud to offer a valuable resource to neurodiverse individuals and others, enabling anyone who may feel anxious about the experience to prepare for air travel with confidence."

The three-part series, developed with the participation of key members of the airport ecosystem, covers important travel processes including check-in, security screening procedures, aircraft boarding, and clearing customs after an international trip. Designed to provide practical guidance, the interactive tool in the videos allows users to navigate typical airport scenarios, interact with personnel, and observe the outcomes of their choices, fostering self-assurance for real-life travel situations.

By seeing an Air Canada aircraft and staff in these videos, and together with our adoption and recognition of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, we hope neurodiverse people and their families can develop the confidence to take a trip soon,” said Christianna Scott, Director – Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Air Canada

In addition to supporting the training video series, YVR is providing comprehensive neurodiverse inclusion training to its employees, from frontline workers such as Guest Experience and Green Coat volunteers, to staff in a range of areas, including Fire and Rescue personnel. These training programs focus on best practices for communication and support to those in the neurodiverse community, ensuring a welcoming, safe, and supportive journey for all passengers. Invitations to the training sessions, delivered by Dr. Fakhri Shafai were extended to other organizations, and many have participated, including but not limited to airport assigned RCMP, Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (U.S. CBP), and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) personnel.

“The Canada Border Services Agency welcomes thousands of travellers to Canada each day and we understand that crossing the border can present unique challenges for neurodiverse individuals,” said CBSA Director Linell Redmond, Vancouver International Airport. “We have an important role to play in helping remove existing barriers and appreciate the opportunity to have our border services officers take part in this training through YVR, PAFN and AIDE Canada”

“CATSA endeavours to create a barrier-free security screening experience that is inclusive and respectful of all travellers,” said Jim Doucette, CATSA’s Director, Service Delivery. “Participating in this training allows screening officers to learn how to best support neurodiverse passengers through the screening process and we are grateful for this opportunity.”

PAFN Board Chair and Co-Founder Sergio Cocchia (O.B.C.) commended YVR President and CEO Tamara Vrooman for her leadership and support to impacted individuals and families. He also appreciated YVR’s ability to see the need to prepare for a travel experience from a different and innovative viewpoint. “Programs are usually geared to the neurodiverse individual learning to adapt in our community. Families spend their lives educating their neurodiverse children on how to adapt to our community, and in these new training sessions we are helping the community adapt to neurodiverse individuals. It's crucial for all airport partners to actively participate in fostering and furthering these forms of inclusivity.”

As of April 2024, 97% of YVR’s guest experience team has completed training. Sessions are ongoing and have been integrated into YVR’s onboarding curriculum for new volunteers joining our Green Coat volunteer program.

The $75 million investment, which will be matched by YVR, will enable the airport to increase overall cargo handling capacity by more than 50 per cent or 160,000 tonnes by 2027. The additional movement of critical high value cargo shipments though YVR will contribute to building a stronger and more resilient supply chain between Canada and global markets, benefitting local businesses and consumers and enhancing the airport’s competitiveness.

The federal funding is in support of a $150 million project to expand air cargo facilities at YVR. Work on the project began in May 2023 and is progressing on schedule under a phased plan with substantial completion set for 2028. Facilities include a taxiway extension, cargo apron expansion, and roadway improvements. The apron expansion will create four additional aircraft stands that will accommodate Boeing 777 freighter aircraft, which are among the most fuel-efficient freighters in use and will contribute to the improved sustainability of cargo movement. The project also includes site preparation for future construction of a new 270,000 square foot warehouse facility and will enable future dike raising work.

The funding and subsequent cargo expansion work at YVR represents a long-term commitment to work with Musqueam, government, and industry partners on important supply chain and transportation infrastructure projects that benefit our community and the economy that supports it.

"When the 2023 Boeing ecoDemonstrator, a 777-200ER (Extended Range), recently taxied to and from the runway at Vancouver International Airport, the standard verbal communication between the pilot and air traffic control went intentionally silent.

The two parties still exchanged taxi instructions – they were just delivered digitally.

In partnership with NAV CANADA, who owns and operates Canada’s civil air navigation system, Boeing recently tested a new electronic flight bag (EFB) capability to coordinate a digital clearance to the airplane for taxiing to the gate upon arrival or toward the runway for departure.

• The capability features Smart Airport Maps, a component of Jeppesen FliteDeck Pro, and provides a graphical depiction of the taxi instructions.
• This can improve pilots’ situational awareness and operational efficiency for airlines.

Why it matters: The recent testing focused on how digital clearances and maps can improve pilot workflows.

“Testing this technology in a real-world environment in collaboration with NAV CANADA is an important step in our goal to improve the efficiency of air traffic control and pilot communication during taxiing,” said Steve Altus, Boeing Technical Fellow, Digital Aviation Solutions.

Taxiing requires a high level of situational awareness from pilots, air traffic controllers and ground crews.

“This technology can help reduce pilot workload, improve operational efficiency and enhance safety,” said Capt. Kirk Vining, Chief Pilot, Product Development in Boeing Test & Evaluation. “It eliminates the need to transcribe voice commands, which reduces errors, and it reduces delays and confusion from routes being broadcast over a shared frequency.”

The potential benefits of the technology extend beyond the flight deck and into the air traffic control towers—one of the reasons why NAV CANADA was keen to collaborate with Boeing.

Boeing and NAV CANADA are testing a technology that could help improve pilots’ situational awareness and operational efficiency for airlines.

“Our goal, as Canada’s air navigation service provider, is to ensure aircraft travel on the safest and most efficient trajectory from departure to arrival, whether they are on the ground or in the air,” explains Blake Cushnie, Program Director at NAV CANADA. “This Boeing ecoDemonstrator trial is crafted with that in mind, and this innovative concept could improve the safety and efficiency of how we manage ground operations between air traffic control and pilots. Collaborating with Boeing allows us to advance these novel ideas, and we are delighted to be part of this endeavor.”

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is celebrating Air Canada’s inaugural flight from Vancouver to Dubai International Airport (DXB). Beginning October 28, Air Canada will fly between YVR and DXB four times per week, marking Western Canada’s first and only non-stop service to the United Arab Emirates.

"Dubai is an exciting destination for non-stop service to YVR.  While exciting in its own right, this new Dubai service will also facilitate connections between Vancouver and the region, India and East Africa,” said Tamara Vrooman, President and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “I would like to thank Air Canada for their continued investment in YVR as their premier transpacific hub. We are thrilled to welcome this new route and connect Western Canada with the United Arab Emirates for the benefit of our community and the economy that supports it.”

Every new international flight to YVR creates value for British Columbia. Non-stop service to Dubai is estimated to generate $30.4 million for the local economy and as many as 63 full-time operations jobs in the province.

In addition to increased passenger flow and economic opportunities between the two cities, travellers will enjoy greater access to onward global connections available from DXB through Air Canada’s partnership with Emirates. Emirates has its hub in DBX which currently ranks as the busiest airport in the world, when measured by volume of international passenger traffic.

The service will operate Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, departing YVR at 9:15 p.m. and arriving to DXB at 12:05 a.m. two days later with a flight time of approximately 15 hours. Passengers on flights to and from Dubai will fly on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft with 298 seats.

On Friday, October 13, nine teams took part in pulling one of YVR's firetrucks, Red 9, weighing 27,000 kilograms. Each team set out to fundraise a minimum of $3,500 in support of Hope Air. They went above and beyond, raising an impressive $21,500 in total! The teams went head-to-head in a friendly competition to see who could pull the firetruck the fastest, with the fastest pull time earning the 2023 Haul for Hope championship.

Taking into account fundraising efforts and the pull times, below are the winners:

• First place: High Heat Haulers 2: North Vancouver, Port Moody and Coquitlam Fire Department representatives (pull time of 28.59 seconds)
• Second place: High Heat Haulers 1: North Vancouver, Port Moody and Coquitlam Fire Department representatives (pull time of 29.11 seconds)
• Third place: YVR Mod Squad: one of three Vancouver Airport Authority teams (pull time of 37.54 seconds)

⁠Hope Air is Canada’s only national charity providing support through flights, accommodations, meal vouchers and ground transportation to Canadians in financial need, who must travel to reach medical care far from home. All funds raised from this event will go towards Hope Air’s mission of ensuring no patient is left behind when accessing vital medical care.

YVR’s commitment to the longstanding partnership with Hope Air is strengthened by shared values of serving the community, especially during times of greatest need.

The event signified the hurdles that patients from remote communities in Canada face when accessing lifesaving medical care.

Our partners at Hudson News Stores (Avolta Group) are also showing their support for Hope Air by allowing shoppers to round up their transactions, with funds raised going to Hope Air.

Currently, Hope Air has already facilitated over 16,000 travel arrangements, surpassing the annual record in the first two thirds of the year for children and families in need of medical care. The number of travel arrangements is expected to reach over 17,000 by the end of 2023.

As part of the ongoing commitment to the principles of their 30-year Sustainability & Friendship Agreement, Musqueam Indian Band and Vancouver International Airport (YVR) are proud to unveil custom artwork designed by Musqueam artist, Summer Cannell, wrapped on Red 5, YVR’s new highly specialized fire truck.

Summer was selected through an open call for Musqueam artists to create a design that would weave her Musqueam culture onto every edge of her latest canvas, which happens to be YVR’s newest fire and rescue truck.

Using the familiar colours of an emergency vehicle, Summer’s artwork embraces traditional Musqueam design and features six magnificent thunderbirds decorating the sides and rear panels of the truck.

“In my culture, everything has a purpose, a meaning behind its stories. The thunderbird is known for its protection, it is a giver of life, and it is known for bringing water,” said Summer Cannell. “I wanted to tie both my Musqueam culture and YVR. I think this truck helps to connect the two.”

The new truck, an Oshkosh Stryker 4500 with capacity for 17,000 litres of water known as Red 5, is now in operation as the sixth fire truck in YVR’s Fire & Rescue fleet. The truck is an integral piece of firefighting equipment and will ensure the team is equipped to continue performing their essential role of keeping the airport and community safe.

The truck was first introduced into operation in June and was on display in Musqueam community on June 21 during National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations.

“Congratulations to Summer Cannell on this exciting new artwork for YVR, where she is proudly showcasing the generations of familial cultural knowledge that has been passed down to her,” said yəχʷyaχʷələq, Musqueam Chief Wayne Sparrow. “Summer is part of the next generation of Musqueam artists bringing our traditional design elements to new mediums throughout our territory, and we look forward to working with YVR to showcase more of our young artists at the airport.”

Musqueam and YVR enjoy a strong and enduring partnership, guided by a shared vision of collaboration, respect, and sustainability. Rooted in the principles of social, economic, environmental, and governance sustainability, the 30-year Musqueam YVR Sustainability & Friendship Agreement was the first of its kind when it was signed in 2017 and has set a benchmark for intercultural partnerships in the region.

Background:

Since 2017, YVR and Musqueam have together created and continue to walk a path of reconciliation. Outcomes of the work performed under the agreement include employing more than 100 members of Musqueam at the airport and across Sea Island, 39 scholarships awarded to Musqueam students, and three additional agreements signed between Musqueam and businesses operating at the airport.

More than the numbers, YVR has incorporated Musqueam culture and protocol throughout its business and operation and continues to increase representation across the airport community. The work of both organizations has resulted in improvements to the ecosystem and the return of salmon spawning in the Fraser River estuary as well as showcasing local Musqueam artisans and providing space for them to sell their goods in the airport.

YVR has also integrated some of the 94 Calls to Action put forward by Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, with more work to follow. 

YVR and Musqueam are located in the same community on land that is traditional Musqueam territory. Musqueam now play an integral role in many areas of YVR’s business and operations, from noise management and environmental advisory to development planning and cultural engagement.

About the artist:

Summer Cannell is an emerging Coast Salish artist from the Musqueam First Nation in British Columbia. Currently, Summer is a West Point Grey Academy high school student, where she has designed a new school logo for the athletics department and a mural within the school representing the community. She has been an avid artist since she was old enough to hold a pencil.

Summer has been exposed to Coast Salish Art and culture from birth; coming from a renowned artistic family, she is the granddaughter of Susan Point. Together Point and Cannell designed a new lobby floor artwork for the leləm̓ Community Centre.
