Musqueam Territory / Richmond, B.C. (August 19, 2026): As part of its commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has launched a new tool for passengers to be part of the transition to a lower-carbon aviation industry. YVR’s online calculator allows travellers to estimate their flight’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and contribute to the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Contributions made through YVR’s new online calculator will be applied to environmental attributes associated with SAF and will enable airlines’ further use of SAF, starting with Air Canada. SAF’s environmental attributes are the quantified climate benefits or reductions associated with its use, such as the GHG emissions avoided by not extracting non-renewable resources used for fossil jet fuel. Contributing to these attributes supports SAF growth and is essential for scaling SAF globally, as it bolsters activity across the supply chain.

“Sustainable Aviation Fuel is one of the most effective options available today to make meaningful progress towards decarbonizing aviation. This new tool gives travellers the opportunity to help increase the use of SAF and support more sustainable air travel,” said Tamara Vrooman, President & CEO at Vancouver International Airport.

SAF is a lower-carbon alternative to fossil jet fuel. It is made from renewable and waste-derived materials and, depending on the feedstock, production pathway and lifecycle-assessment methodology, can have lower lifecycle GHG emissions than fossil jet fuel. Certain SAF may achieve lifecycle GHG reductions of up to 80 per cent when used in neat form compared with fossil jet fuel. As a “drop-in” fuel, it can be blended with fossil jet fuel and requires no changes to today’s aircraft or existing airport infrastructure.

While SAF is currently in use by some airlines, including those operating at YVR, as an emerging fuel source, limited production and higher prices are obstacles for wider uptake. As production increases and more supply becomes available, costs are likely to lower, increasing the proportion of SAF to be likely used in flights around the world.

This initiative is part of YVR’s broader efforts to raise awareness of SAF and support airline partners in increasing their SAF use to advance the aviation industry’s goal of net zero emissions by 2050. While voluntary contributions through YVR’s online calculator help support the broader adoption of SAF by Air Canada over time, the tool is available to all passengers regardless of which airline they travel on.

As Canada’s second busiest airport and the Pacific gateway to Asia and beyond, YVR plays a critical role in facilitating travel and tourism while also connecting B.C. to global markets. In 2025, YVR welcomed a record 26.9 million passengers and moved approximately 365,000 tonnes of cargo, representing approximately $35 billion in goods. These trade and cargo movements are essential to our region and province, and country, particularly as YVR focuses on doubling cargo volumes by 2031 and getting more of Canada to the world. All of which is enabled by a diverse group of employees who move what matters every day.

As part of today’s celebration, airport workers came together to create a collaborative art installation representing the many employees who keep people and cargo moving through YVR every day. The completed display will serve as a visual reminder of the thousands of people who make up the airport community.

Airport Workers Day also recognizes outstanding contributions across Canada’s aviation sector through peer-nominated awards celebrating dedication and leadership nationally. For the past three years running, YVR colleagues have proudly been among those recognized. This year, Jessica Chan is being recognized for her leadership and contributions to sustainability and environmental initiatives at YVR.

Moody’s says the Aa2 rating reflects YVR’s very strong market position as Canada’s primary Asia-Pacific gateway and the country’s second-largest airport and key international hub. It also highlights the Airport Authority’s robust operating performance, prudent capital planning, and disciplined financial management.

The agency’s analysis notes YVR benefits from structurally strong passenger demand underpinning its long-term traffic resilience and continues to grow cargo volumes, which saw a record year in 2025 alongside the strongest passenger volumes in the airport’s history, reinforcing its position as a cargo hub. In addition, Moody’s calls out the Airport Authority’s exceptionally strong credit metrics with low leverage.

The Moody’s public rating follows recent positive rating actions from S&P Global Ratings and Morningstar DBRS. In March 2026, S&P upgraded the Airport Authority’s long-term issuer credit and senior unsecured debt ratings to AA with a stable outlook, citing strong financial performance, robust passenger demand, and disciplined capital investment planning. In April 2026, Morningstar DBRS confirmed the Airport Authority’s Issuer Rating and Senior Debentures rating at AA (low) with Stable trends, supported by strong service area fundamentals, resilient traffic performance, conservative financial management, and comparatively low aeronautical fees.

The rating, which is provided to the Vancouver Airport Authority, the organization that manages and operates the airport, reflects Morningstar DBRS’ assessment of YVR’s competitive aeronautical fees, strategic location, passenger traffic growth, economic strength, and improving debt metrics. Morningstar DBRS forecasts that VAA’s financial metrics will continue to support the current rating until 2030. The reaffirmation underscores YVR's robust market position and prudent approach to capital investment.

As the country’s second busiest airport and Canada’s Pacific gateway to Asia and beyond, YVR is already seeing record cargo volumes moving through Vancouver, particularly heading to Asia Pacific destinations. This includes high value B.C. natural resources such as precious metals and critical minerals, machinery and electronics, pharmaceuticals, as well as sought after perishables such as West Coast seafood, and B.C. produce.

This cargo commitment will also further grow YVR’s role as a significant economic engine for B.C. and the country. Updated economic impact numbers provided by Canadian accounting and business consulting firm, MNP show a major increase in jobs and economic impact:

• More than 28,000 people work at YVR, up eight per cent over the past two years.
• YVR supports more than 115,000 jobs in B.C., 130,000 jobs nationally.

• YVR has a $13.5 billion impact on B.C.’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), up 11 per cent over two years, and a $15.8 billion impact on Canada’s national GDP.

   

For 2026, YVR continues to see increasing passenger and cargo demand, particularly to Asia Pacific destinations with a forecast of 10 per cent passenger growth on top of 15 per cent year-over-year growth to the region in 2025. Increased flights and new destinations from a number of carriers in spring and summer 2026 alone will see an additional 400,000 passengers come through YVR and more than $500 million in increased capacity for high value air cargo.

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has once again been named Best Airport in North America as part of the Skytrax World Airport Awards announced earlier today in London, England. YVR also stood out amongst the top airports globally, ranked 10th in Skytrax’s list of the world’s top 20 airports, an increase of three spots from 13^th in 2025, and up seven places from 2024.

Skytrax is recognized as the world’s premier international airport and aviation awards, with winners determined by votes cast by more than 13-million passengers around the globe. YVR has earned the title Best Airport in North America 15 out of the last 17 years and is the only airport ever to receive the award 15 times.

As Canada’s second busiest airport and a critical hub as Canada’s Pacific gateway to Asia and beyond, YVR served a record 26.9 million travellers and moved more than 365,000 tonnes of high value or time sensitive cargo in 2025. These are the highest volumes in the airport’s almost 95-year history and are a testament to the strength of the airport’s operations, customer service, innovations, and overall passenger experience.

As a diverse hub and vital link in global supply chain networks, YVR is an economic engine that supports jobs, trade diversification, and connectivity for British Columbia and Canada, contributing more than $15 billion annually to Canada’s GDP, and supporting more than 26,000 jobs on Sea Island as well as more than 119,000 jobs across B.C.

As Canada seeks to double exports to new and diverse global markets, YVR’s efforts to further grow air connectivity will play a critical role in getting more of Canada to the world while supporting jobs and economic growth here at home.

Additionally, S&P views YVR as a major hub and a key gateway to the Asia-Pacific region, contributing to strong long-term demand and future growth despite ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty.

Coming off YVR’s busiest year in the airport’s history in 2025 with record cargo and passenger volumes, the Airport Authority is leaning into its role as a global hub and Canada Pacific gateway to Asia and beyond, innovating and enhancing its operations to drive future economic growth for British Columbia and Canada while maintaining protection from market uncertainties.

This 2.7 per cent year-over-year increase in passengers is a testament to YVR’s tireless work with airlines, tourism organizations, and other stakeholders to strengthen its position as a global hub and a critical gateway between North America, Asia, and beyond. The previous record of 26.3 million passengers was set in 2019.

By sector, domestic travel was up 3.8 per cent. Notably, for international travel, Asia Pacific passenger volumes increased 15.6 per cent year over year, while transborder traffic between YVR and U.S. destinations declined by 7.1 per cent amidst shifting global travel patterns.

On cargo shipments, 365,000 tonnes of goods moved through the airport, which represents a 7.4 per cent increase over 2024, reinforcing YVR’s key role in the local and national supply chain, particularly for high value, time sensitive, and perishable exports.

“Strong operations and customer service combined with globally recognized innovation generated record results in 2025,” said Tamara Vrooman, President and CEO of Vancouver International Airport. “I recognize and thank our outstanding YVR and Sea Island employees, our partners at Musqueam, as well as our airline customers and passengers for contributing to this achievement.”

YVR’s 2025 passenger and cargo results reflect the airport’s position as Canada’s second busiest airport and its role as a critical economic engine, contributing more than $15 billion to Canada’s GDP each year. For example, a year-round wide-body international flight, such as T’Way Airlines’ service to Seoul, South Korea, which launched last July, is estimated to generate $39.8 million in economic output, $20.8 million in GDP, and 237 full time jobs in the province.  

“Looking forward, YVR is ready to go to welcome additional flights and carriers to get more of Canada to global markets while at the same time creating jobs and opportunity here at home,” added Vrooman. “As governments look to sign new bilateral and trade agreements, we are on the ground in those emerging markets, engaged with our partners, building new relationships today to be ready for that additional growth tomorrow.”

YVR is now host to 57 airlines serving 129 non-stop destinations across the province and around the world.

-         Best Airport in North America: YVR was once again voted Best Airport in North America, the 14^th time in the past 16 years, and ranked 13^th in the world’s top 20 airports by the Skytrax World Airport Awards.

-         Celebrating new airlines and destinations: YVR welcomed a variety of new and returning destinations and carriers including Air Canada to Manila and Beijing, China Southern to Guangzhou, China Eastern service to Shanghai, T’Way Airlines to Seoul, and WestJet to Liberia, Costa Rica, connecting even more of the province to the world.

-         Providing a digital-first experience with Air Canada for travellers to Canadian destinations: YVR became the first airport in Canada to install e-gates for Air Canada’s Domestic Digital ID program, which is also being expanded to U.S. departures. This allows travellers to use biometric identity verification tools rather than show boarding passes and physical identification.

-         Making security screening more seamless: YVR worked with Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) to become the first airport to install Computed Tomography (CT) X-ray equipment at the airport’s Domestic screening facilities. The new technology allows passengers to leave large electronics, such as laptops, and liquids in their bags for a faster security screening experience.

The launch of this route is more than just a new flight—it is a gateway to enhanced connectivity with passengers now able to enjoy seamless travel for both leisure and business. With this addition, YVR will now provide non-stop service to 103 global destinations for the 2025/2026 winter season, further supporting its strategy to expand direct access for passengers and that drives economic growth for the region.

Flights with WestJet from Vancouver to Liberia, Costa Rica operate once weekly throughout the winter season until April 2026 and are scheduled to depart YVR on Fridays at 12:05 a.m. local time, arriving at Liberia International Airport (LIR) at 09:21 a.m. local time.

WestJet passengers travelling to Costa Rica can enjoy a special limited-time promotion at YVR, with 25% off Plaza Premium Lounge access from December 12 until December 26, 2025. Please see a representative at the lounge to redeem this offer.

This year, YVR matched all funds raised during the event for a total contribution of $46,761, which will help more than 3,700 British Columbians purchase groceries over the holidays.

Greetings & Giving supports Quest’s new Holiday Gift Card Program, which allows individuals and families to purchase groceries that best meet their cultural preferences, dietary needs, and holiday traditions, while also helping stock Quest’s non-profit markets.

YVR and Quest’s annual event at the airport began as a food drive in 2011 grew into a Holiday Hamper Drive, and is now designed to secure monetary donations, demonstrating a shared commitment to food security and evolving alongside the needs of the community.

The new Greetings & Giving event at YVR included festive celebrations to help drive donations, such as music, cookies, hot chocolate, and a TapSnap Photobooth. The event also included a YVR-branded holiday greeting card station, allowing participants to send a card alongside their donation.

Donations are still being accepted and can be made online. YVR will continue to match all contributions until December 31, doubling the impact.

2025 marks the 15^th year anniversary of YVR bringing together the Sea Island community during the holiday season to support families across British Columbia in partnership with Quest. Since 2011, YVR has provided Quest Outreach with nearly $1 million in grants, alongside all funds raised and in kind support.

Aircraft operate on tight schedules within a complex global route network, where punctuality is of critical importance for the overall movement of people and goods. An aircraft turnaround is the coordinated sequence of ground activities at the gate that prepares an aircraft for its next departure, from cargo loading, baggage handling, cleaning, and catering to technical checks, and boarding.

Using cameras at the gates, Deep Turnaround analyzes CCTV footage to automatically detect, log, and sequence turnaround events. This data will be fed into YVR’s Digital Twin, allowing for analysis and optimization of the end-to-end process.

We are excited to turn on the Deep Turnaround software capabilities to give us better insights on turnaround activity.  Deep Turnaround will be in place at select gates at the airport and will be expanded over multiple phases. As passenger and cargo volumes grow, YVR is committed to delivering measurable improvements in on-time performance while advancing its digital transformation to support sustainable growth and create a smarter and more efficient airport experience.

Due to anxiety and sensory sensitivities, individuals on the autism spectrum can become overwhelmed by the airport environment. This tour is designed to reduce anxiety, remove travel barriers, and build confidence by preparing Autistic individuals for what to expect, making the airport a less stressful and more predictable place. 

“The airport is often a very fast-paced and sensory-rich environment, which can represent a challenge for many Autistic individuals,” said Sarah Armstrong, Director of Strategic Partnerships with Canucks Autism Network (CAN). “These rehearsal events help increase predictability and decrease stress, opening up a world of possibilities for the autism community.” 

The tour includes checking-in, going through security screening with the support of CATSA, boarding an Air Canada Express aircraft, and a short taxi in the airplane. This year, more than 70 individuals ranging from 3 to 41 years old. 

Since 2014, YVR and CAN have worked together to create events and resources that increase autism accessibility in air travel. After 11 years, YVR Autism Aviation Day has reached nearly 600 attendees.

In more recent years, YVR Autism Aviation Days have been bolstered by the support of Air Canada and Air Canada Foundation. Building off the success of the long-standing Vancouver event, they have helped deliver similar events with CAN at Victoria International Airport and Kamloops Airport.

In addition to the Learn to Fly tour, CAN and YVR have worked together to develop resources, like visual checklists, step-by-step instructions, and tipsheets for Autistic travelers. These resources can be accessed at any pre-security Information Counter at YVR. 

This past year, YVR also supported in the launch of an online course designed for travel industry professionals to learn about autism accessibility. Developed by CAN, the course provides an introduction to Autism and neurodiversity along with strategies for communication and support. Learn more at learn.canucksautism.ca.

YVR’s increasing passenger and cargo numbers reflect the airport’s role as an economic engine, trade enabler, and diverse global hub. YVR is currently the only airport in North America that is on track to become net zero by 2030 and continues to lead many first-of-its-kind initiatives in Canada, such as biometric security screening and boarding as well as championing accessibility measures such as sign language on all boarding gate screens.

Prior to joining YVR as President and CEO in 2020, Vrooman spent more than a decade as the President and CEO of Vancity Credit Union and served as Deputy Minister of Finance for the Province of British Columbia, the youngest person ever to hold that role, as well as Deputy Minister of Health. Twenty four teams compromised of employees from YVR and businesses across the airport and Metro Vancouver each set out to raise funds for Hope Air, and on September 16, came together to compete for the fastest time in pulling a Q400 aircraft 75 metres. The aircraft, provided by sponsor WestJet, weighs more than 67,000 lbs. Both YVR North Runway Renegades and Kiewit FodFathers teams pulled the plane in 22 seconds, becoming the shared 2025 Haul for Hope champions. The effort is a powerful symbol of the journey many Hope Air patients must undertake to access critical medical care far from home.

“We are incredibly grateful to our hosts at YVR and to all of the teams who joined us for the third annual Haul for Hope in Vancouver,” said Mark Rubinstein, CEO of Hope Air. “The energy, teamwork, and generosity on display will have a direct impact on patients and families who rely on Hope Air to access life-saving medical care far from home.”

Hope Air is Canada’s only national charity providing support through flights, accommodations, meal vouchers and ground transportation to Canadians in financial need, who must travel to reach medical care far from home. All funds raised from this event will go towards Hope Air’s mission of ensuring no Canadian is left behind when it comes to accessing critical healthcare.

"Without Hope Air I would have gone further into debt, trying to pay for medical flights, accommodations, and travel expenses. They have lifted a huge weight off my shoulders while I battle cancer. I couldn’t be more thankful for them,” says Jennifer, Hope Air patient from Terrace, BC.

Of all funds raised during the Haul for Hope event, YVR contributed $50,000 and matched all funds raised by its six employee teams, for a total donation of over $95,000.

The new T’way service provides the community with even more flexibility and convenience when travelling to South Korea and connections across Asia, but the benefits of this new service go beyond passengers alone. An additional air connection provides increased cargo capacity to further diversify trading markets and get British Columbian and Canadian products to consumers in Asia and around the world. 2024 was a record-breaking year for cargo out of YVR with more than 339,000 tonnes of goods shipped through the airport and South Korea is YVR’s number two air export destination.

"British Columbia has long had strong ties with South Korea and is home to a large Korean community that continues to make significant contributions to the cultural diversity and prosperity of our province,” said B.C. Premier David Eby. “This affordable direct flight will allow people to stay connected with friends and family across the Pacific and also means that it will be faster and easier to do business with our fourth largest trading partner, strengthening the economic ties between us during a time of global uncertainty.”

Each new international route from YVR results in direct economic benefit, with the flight to Seoul estimated to generate $39.8 million in economic output, $20.8 million in GDP, and 237 full time jobs in the province.

Prior to the flight departing for its inaugural 11-hour journey, Elders from Musqueam, joined by Musqueam Councillor Morgan Guerin, helped send passengers on their journey in a good way with traditional songs and hands raised. Since 2017, this relationship has been guided by the Musqueam-YVR Sustainability & Friendship Agreement, a 30-year commitment built on respect, reconciliation, and shared prosperity. 

Flights with T’way from Vancouver to Seoul are scheduled to depart YVR at 5:25 p.m. local time arriving at ICN the next day at 9:35 p.m. local time. T’way is operating this route using an Airbus 330-300 aircraft, offering 347 seats, including lie-flat options in its Business Saver class, moving approximately 2,700 passengers weekly. 

Established in 2010, T’way Air is a low-cost carrier serving more than 40 destinations domestically in South Korea and around the globe including Europe, Asia, Australia, and now North America with the introduction of service to YVR.

The newly renovated Vancouver Duty Free at YVR, which has expanded by 7,000 square feet to 30,000 square feet, spans two walkthrough locations post-security in International departures. Between March 10 and April 2, YVR encouraged food lovers, travel enthusiasts, and locals to visit a range of Filipino restaurants across the Lower Mainland, to help promote and create excitement for the new route. Through its Taste of the Philippines Food Tour, YVR provided participants with a chance to enter to win roundtrip airfare for two on the new YVR-MNL route, courtesy of Air Canada. Lucky contest winners will be announced, prior to May 1, 2025.  

The flight to Manila from YVR operates three times weekly through the month of April, and will increase to four times weekly in May. Flights depart YVR at 1:55 a.m. and arrive at MNL at 6:20 a.m. local time the next day. Passengers on flights to and from Manila will fly on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner with 298 seat capacity.

This five per cent increase over the previous year’s 24.9 million travellers is a testament to YVR’s domestic and international connectivity, and continuous work with airlines and tourism and business organizations to strengthen its position as a global hub. YVR has surpassed the 26 million milestone only once before—in 2019, welcoming 26.3 million travellers.  

In addition, YVR moved 339,000 tonnes of cargo in 2024, setting a new record. This represents a seven per cent increase over 2023’s volume of 316,000 tonnes and surpassed YVR’s previous record of 338,000 tonnes back in 2018.

In 2024, domestic travellers were up 0.3 per cent compared to 2023. Transborder flights – between YVR and U.S. destinations – also saw significant passenger growth, with a 9.7 per cent increase versus the previous year. International flights witnessed a substantial 10.4 per cent increase in travellers compared to 2023.

YVR’s growing passenger and cargo numbers reflect the airport’s position as Canada’s second busiest airport, and its role as a critical economic engine for Metro Vancouver and the province. YVR is now host to 51 airlines serving 120 destinations across the country and around the world.

According to analysis recently completed for YVR, the airport’s contribution to Canada’s GDP is approximately $15 billion. The economic impact extends far beyond the airport itself. A daily year-round wide-body international flight, such as Air Canada’s service from YVR to Shanghai, will generate $33 million in GDP. It also supports nearly 400 jobs at the airport and in industries such as tourism and hospitality, while opening the door for new growth opportunities.    

“With our continued focus on increasing accessibility, investing in innovation and building towards a future as an intermodal transportation hub, we are further strengthening YVR’s position as critical supply chain infrastructure supporting local and global connectivity,” concluded Vrooman.

To prepare for the Invictus Games, YVR has collaborated closely with event organizers, Musqueam, and federal agencies, and has established dedicated cross-functional teams to support arriving athletes.    

Support for travelling competitors is being guided by YVR’s Beyond Accessibility plan, which serves as a framework for the airport to continue to provide an inclusive and accessible travel experience for people of all abilities. Support in the terminals includes accessible facilities, dedicated assistance services for travellers with disabilities, and communication support for those with hearing or visual impairments. 

To further enhance the experience for Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 participants, YVR has introduced additional accessibility measures, including: 

• Two new temporary quiet rooms in its Arrivals areas. 
• Additional autonomous pods by A&K Robotics to assist passengers with mobility needs. 
• YVR staff ambassadors stationed at boarding gates to welcome and escort Invictus teams as they arrive. 
• Dedicated lanes for Invictus competitors in the Customs Hall, in collaboration with the Canadian Border Services Agency.  
• Increased staffing to assist with equipment and baggage and the movement of specialized and adapted sports gear.

YVR employees, partners, passengers and the Sea Island community came together to fill the hampers with meal essentials and festive favourites to ensure delivery for families facing food insecurity across the Lower Mainland this holiday season.  The YVR-Quest pop-up market – a favourite from last year – was back for the third straight year.

“The holidays are a time for family and friends to come together over shared meals and beautiful food. What we’ve seen and experienced over the past year are increasing barriers to accessing good food and healthy groceries,” said Theodora Lamb, Executive Director of Quest. “We know more than 21 per cent of British Columbians, or just over one million people, live in food-insecure households. The incredible spirit and generosity of everyone at YVR makes a day like today, with a real impact on people in need, possible.”

YVR has been a committed partner to Quest Outreach Society and the organizations’ goal of ensuring access to healthy and affordable food since 2011. A shared commitment to supporting our community fuels the airport’s drive to host the holiday hamper event and ensure its success.

The festive event at YVR included music, cookies, hot chocolate, and a TapSnap Photobooth. New this year was a YVR branded holiday greeting card station, allowing travellers, employees and community members to include a card in their hamper for a personal touch.

Hampers were packed with antibiotic-free and halal certified turkeys, fresh local produce (onions, carrots, potatoes, beets, and mandarin oranges), two packs of gravy and chicken stock, stuffing, cranberry sauce and a sweet holiday treat.

In addition to hosting the event onsite in the airport’s international terminal, YVR also donated $65,000 to Quest to support this initiative and its regular programming. 

Quest distributes the hampers to partner agencies and registered clients of their non-profit grocery stores.

The AA- and AA (low) ratings issued by the two credit authorities further reinforce the Airport Authority’s superior credit quality supported by the strength of its strategic location, relatively low debt burden, prudent management overall, and the expectation that continued passenger growth will support upcoming operations and capital needs.

Musqueam Territory/Richmond, B.C. (September 27, 2024): As part of Vancouver International Airport’s (YVR) commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety, the Airport Authority conducted its annual airport-wide emergency training exercise earlier this week, simulating a large-scale response to a major aircraft incident.

YVR’s terminal, airfield and facilities around the airport were used to rehearse multi-layered emergency response plans with airlines, multiple aviation and related agencies, health authorities, emergency services and municipalities. Nearly 200 people from local, provincial, national and federal organizations were involved.

“The large-scale exercise taking place at the airport demonstrates our focus and commitment to safety at YVR,” said Andy Margolis, Chief Operations Officers at Vancouver International Airport. “Regular testing of our Emergency Management Plan and training response personnel are a vital part of our emergency preparedness, allowing us to evaluate and refine our emergency protocols. I would like to acknowledge and thank our YVR team and volunteers, as well as hundreds of colleagues from aviation and emergency response agencies across the region for their dedication and support required to conduct an exercise of this scope and scale.”

YVR hosts one large-scale exercise per year, in addition to multiple other safety focused training events. Emergency exercises can include live scenario training, table-top exercises and emergency simulation drills. YVR’s Emergency Management Plan deals with a wide range of emergency situations including aircraft incidents, natural disasters, medical emergencies, security threats and biological hazards. It is refined on a regular basis to incorporate knowledge learned through exercises and the latest developments in airport safety and emergency management.

This year’s airport-wide emergency training exercise at YVR comes during Canadian Airports Safety Week, during which the Airport Authority is holding a series of activities centered around safety.

Under its Roadmap to Net Zero YVR continues to decarbonize its operations by 2030, while taking steps to enable the overall aviation sector to achieve net zero carbon by 2050. As aviation and other industries move towards electrification, YVR is planning for future energy needs in a financially sustainable way that also benefits the community and economy that supports it.

As part of its planning process, YVR today announced it has formed an Energy Advisory Council, a group of six experts who will provide the Airport Authority with advice and guidance on actions needed to build future energy solutions concerning aviation and infrastructure development on Sea Island.

“We have a unique opportunity to chart a sustainable path forward not only for our airport, but also for our industry and region through our work with YVR’s Energy Advisory Council,” said Tamara Vrooman, President and CEO at Vancouver International Airport. “As we explore climate solutions, the Council will provide us with expert advice, and identify partnerships to advance our energy transition. I’m confident the Council will expand our thinking and support YVR’s vision to meet energy needs sustainably for the next four to five decades – and beyond.”

YVR selected Council members based on their diverse experience and expertise.  In addition to providing ongoing advice, the Council will produce a report that outlines the actions and considerations that are necessary to deliver new energy solutions, in support of the Airport Authority’s goals.

YVR Autism Aviation Days provides an opportunity for attendees to rehearse the entire pre-flight process in a highly-supported environment. The practice run includes checking-in, going through security screening, boarding an Air Canada Express aircraft for a simulated pre-flight experience, and, for the first time this year, a short taxi in the airplane.

The three events will welcome a total of 180 attendees – ranging from families with children and youth on the autism spectrum to Autistic adults looking for experience to travel independently.

“With an estimated 1 in 30 children and youth on the autism spectrum in B.C., events such as these are vital to increasing accessibility and inclusion,” said Sarah Armstrong, Director of Strategic Partnerships with Canucks Autism Network (CAN). “Airport ‘rehearsals’ can greatly benefit Autistic individuals and their families by increasing predictability and decreasing stress.”

The initiative began between CAN and YVR in 2014. After 10 years, the events have made a positive difference for more than 500 individuals.

"Travel is essential to maintaining human connections, expanding our experiences, and accessing essential services. By offering neurodiverse individuals and their families the chance to rehearse the pre-flight process, we open doors to important travel possibilities,” stated Tamara Vrooman, President and CEO of Vancouver International Airport. “We are proud to partner with CAN and Air Canada to create these experiences and thank the many government agencies and businesses at the airport for their support with this initiative.”

In addition to the rehearsal, each family receives a YVR Sensory Resource Kit, which includes noise-cancelling headphones, an airport map, and check-list to support Autistic travellers or anyone with sensory sensitivities. The kit is available year-round from any pre-security YVR Customer Care counter.

The bustling and high-stress atmosphere of airports can be challenging for neurodiverse individuals. To address this concern, YVR, PAFN, and AIDE combined expertise to develop a video series which simulates the travel experience from the curb to cloud. These on-demand videos enable individuals to familiarize themselves with various travel processes, empowering them to approach real travel situations with confidence.

"A little bit of planning ahead can make all the difference to a travel journey. Through our partnership with PAFN and AIDE Canada, YVR is proud to offer a valuable resource to neurodiverse individuals and others, enabling anyone who may feel anxious about the experience to prepare for air travel with confidence."

The three-part series, developed with the participation of key members of the airport ecosystem, covers important travel processes including check-in, security screening procedures, aircraft boarding, and clearing customs after an international trip. Designed to provide practical guidance, the interactive tool in the videos allows users to navigate typical airport scenarios, interact with personnel, and observe the outcomes of their choices, fostering self-assurance for real-life travel situations.

“We are delighted to support neurodiverse communities by introducing the wonder of travel and what they can expect through these interactive travel training videos. By seeing an Air Canada aircraft and staff in these videos, and together with our adoption and recognition of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, we hope neurodiverse people and their families can develop the confidence to take a trip soon,” said Christianna Scott, Director – Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Air Canada

In addition to supporting the training video series, YVR is providing comprehensive neurodiverse inclusion training to its employees, from frontline workers such as Guest Experience and Green Coat volunteers, to staff in a range of areas, including Fire and Rescue personnel. These training programs focus on best practices for communication and support to those in the neurodiverse community, ensuring a welcoming, safe, and supportive journey for all passengers. Invitations to the training sessions, delivered by Dr. Fakhri Shafai were extended to other organizations, and many have participated, including but not limited to airport assigned RCMP, Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (U.S. CBP), and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) personnel.

“The Canada Border Services Agency welcomes thousands of travellers to Canada each day and we understand that crossing the border can present unique challenges for neurodiverse individuals,” said CBSA Director Linell Redmond, Vancouver International Airport. “We have an important role to play in helping remove existing barriers and appreciate the opportunity to have our border services officers take part in this training through YVR, PAFN and AIDE Canada”

“CATSA endeavours to create a barrier-free security screening experience that is inclusive and respectful of all travellers,” said Jim Doucette, CATSA’s Director, Service Delivery. “Participating in this training allows screening officers to learn how to best support neurodiverse passengers through the screening process and we are grateful for this opportunity.”

PAFN Board Chair and Co-Founder Sergio Cocchia (O.B.C.) commended YVR President and CEO Tamara Vrooman for her leadership and support to impacted individuals and families. He also appreciated YVR’s ability to see the need to prepare for a travel experience from a different and innovative viewpoint. “Programs are usually geared to the neurodiverse individual learning to adapt in our community. Families spend their lives educating their neurodiverse children on how to adapt to our community, and in these new training sessions we are helping the community adapt to neurodiverse individuals. It's crucial for all airport partners to actively participate in fostering and furthering these forms of inclusivity.”

As of April 2024, 97% of YVR’s guest experience team has completed training. Sessions are ongoing and have been integrated into YVR’s onboarding curriculum for new volunteers joining our Green Coat volunteer program.

Statement

There are approximately 550 businesses across Sea Island and the airport community. While the Airport Authority is a proud Living Wage supporter, it has no role in any collective bargaining negotiations between these businesses and their respective employees.  

In 2022, the Vancouver Airport Authority, working in tandem with the Public Service Alliance of Canada, the union which represents its employees, was certified as a Living Wage employer by Living Wage for Families BC, becoming the first airport operator in Canada to be certified as a Living Wage Employer, and has since maintained this designation with Living Wage for Families BC.

As a certified Living Wage Employer, the Airport Authority pays its more than 900 employees at or above the designated living wage for Metro Vancouver, as established by Living Wage for Families BC.

As required by the detailed certification criteria, the Airport Authority must also ensure businesses that provide direct contracted services to the Authority, such as the staff that clean the terminal, provide building security, collect and manage baggage carts, provide traffic management and construction services, also pay a living wage to their employees at the airport.  This represents approximately 80 companies and an additional 1600 workers.

In May, the Airport Authority and Living Wage for Families BC will be hosting seminars for employers operating on Sea Island to learn about the process and benefits of becoming a Living Wage Employer. Similar briefings are being offered to labour organizations.

YVR last received Best Airport in North America in 2021, and since that time has successfully moved through the global pandemic and its impacts to aviation, with a focus on key strategic priorities for the benefit of travellers, the community and the economy that supports it.

In 2023, YVR served 24.9 million travellers and implemented a number of operational improvements, while increasing collaboration with government and airlines, to build resilience and deliver a more efficient, predictable travel experience. This includes delivering accessibility programs and initiatives that meet the diverse needs of travellers and employees, ranging from a new Curbside Greeting program to sign language on information boards at each departure gate.

The Skytrax World Airport Awards are globally recognized and are voted on by air travellers via the single largest, annual airport customer satisfaction survey, covering more than 550 airports. The survey and awards are independent of any airport control or input. The survey evaluates the customer experience across all frontline areas of airport service and facilities.

YVR is the only airport to receive the designation of Best Airport in North America 14 times.

The $75 million investment, which will be matched by YVR, will enable the airport to increase overall cargo handling capacity by more than 50 per cent or 160,000 tonnes by 2027. The additional movement of critical high value cargo shipments though YVR will contribute to building a stronger and more resilient supply chain between Canada and global markets, benefitting local businesses and consumers and enhancing the airport’s competitiveness.

The federal funding is in support of a $150 million project to expand air cargo facilities at YVR. Work on the project began in May 2023 and is progressing on schedule under a phased plan with substantial completion set for 2028. Facilities include a taxiway extension, cargo apron expansion, and roadway improvements. The apron expansion will create four additional aircraft stands that will accommodate Boeing 777 freighter aircraft, which are among the most fuel-efficient freighters in use and will contribute to the improved sustainability of cargo movement. The project also includes site preparation for future construction of a new 270,000 square foot warehouse facility and will enable future dike raising work.

The funding and subsequent cargo expansion work at YVR represents a long-term commitment to work with Musqueam, government, and industry partners on important supply chain and transportation infrastructure projects that benefit our community and the economy that supports it.
