YVR is anticipating approximately 350,000 travellers will pass through the airport between Friday, Sept. 4 and Monday, Sept. 7, averaging about 87,000 each day. The busiest days are expected to be Monday with 90,000 passengers forecast and Friday with 88,000 passengers anticipated.

With the FIFA 2026 World Cup kicking off the summer season back in June and then strong visitor and cruise traffic into Vancouver this year, the Labour Day long weekend follows what is shaping up to be a record-breaking summer travel season at YVR. Final passenger volumes will be confirmed in early fall.

YVR is also seeing strong cargo growth this year, with 13 per cent more cargo moving through the airport through July compared with the same period last year. This is being driven by strong international activity, particularly from Asia and Europe. YVR recently announced a pledge to double our air cargo volumes over the next five years.

The top 10 destinations from YVR over the Labour Day long weekend are:

• Toronto
• Calgary
• Edmonton
• Montreal
• Hong Kong
• San Francisco
• Los Angeles
• Seattle
• Kelowna
• Seoul

Travellers coming through YVR this long weekend will also have another option to grab a bite, with YVR’s second and larger Pret A Manger location opening August 31st post-security in the Domestic Terminal, near Gate B17.

Passengers can also help make their journey smoother this busy long weekend by confirming flight details with their airline or at yvr.ca before heading to the airport. Those driving to YVR are encouraged to reserve parking in advance and give themselves adequate driving time, particularly during peak travel periods.

People will also notice the following YVR innovation investments to help make for a seamless journey from curbside to gate:

• Computed Tomography (CT) X-ray equipment at both Domestic checkpoints allows domestic travellers to save time by leaving large electronics, such as laptops, and liquids in their bags for a faster security screening experience.
• Travellers also have more opportunities to use biometric identity verification tools instead of showing boarding passes and physical identification, with United Airlines now joining the biometrics program and YVR reaching a key milestone of 500,000 passengers boarded using biometrics so far this year. This includes Air Canada’s Digital ID program for domestic flights and newly installed e-gates for those travelling to the U.S. via U.S. Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) Traveller Verification Service (TVS) facial comparison technology.

Musqueam Territory / Richmond, B.C. (August 19, 2026): As part of its commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has launched a new tool for passengers to be part of the transition to a lower-carbon aviation industry. YVR’s online calculator allows travellers to estimate their flight’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and contribute to the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Contributions made through YVR’s new online calculator will be applied to environmental attributes associated with SAF and will enable airlines’ further use of SAF, starting with Air Canada. SAF’s environmental attributes are the quantified climate benefits or reductions associated with its use, such as the GHG emissions avoided by not extracting non-renewable resources used for fossil jet fuel. Contributing to these attributes supports SAF growth and is essential for scaling SAF globally, as it bolsters activity across the supply chain.

“Sustainable Aviation Fuel is one of the most effective options available today to make meaningful progress towards decarbonizing aviation. This new tool gives travellers the opportunity to help increase the use of SAF and support more sustainable air travel,” said Tamara Vrooman, President & CEO at Vancouver International Airport.

SAF is a lower-carbon alternative to fossil jet fuel. It is made from renewable and waste-derived materials and, depending on the feedstock, production pathway and lifecycle-assessment methodology, can have lower lifecycle GHG emissions than fossil jet fuel. Certain SAF may achieve lifecycle GHG reductions of up to 80 per cent when used in neat form compared with fossil jet fuel. As a “drop-in” fuel, it can be blended with fossil jet fuel and requires no changes to today’s aircraft or existing airport infrastructure.

While SAF is currently in use by some airlines, including those operating at YVR, as an emerging fuel source, limited production and higher prices are obstacles for wider uptake. As production increases and more supply becomes available, costs are likely to lower, increasing the proportion of SAF to be likely used in flights around the world.

This initiative is part of YVR’s broader efforts to raise awareness of SAF and support airline partners in increasing their SAF use to advance the aviation industry’s goal of net zero emissions by 2050. While voluntary contributions through YVR’s online calculator help support the broader adoption of SAF by Air Canada over time, the tool is available to all passengers regardless of which airline they travel on.

During the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June and July 2026, our airport and our city had the privilege of welcoming the world to Vancouver. For many players, officials, fans, and other World Cup visitors, YVR was their first impression of British Columbia, and, for many, it won’t be their last. That is a responsibility we took seriously, and a responsibility our team met with pride, professionalism, and care.

YVR welcomed a total of ten teams over the course of the tournament. From the moment the players stepped off their aircraft and onto our airfield, British Columbia hospitality was on full display. Each team was welcomed by Musqueam representatives upon landing, beginning their time here in a good way and reminding all of us that major global events are also moments to honour place, partnership, and community.

YVR exists to serve our community and the economy that supports it. During the games period, that purpose was especially visible. Nearly 2.8 million passengers travelled through YVR during the games period from June 8 to July 10, with an average of more than 86,000 travellers each day. Our busiest day approached 92,000 passengers. Behind those numbers are real moments. Families arriving for the match of a lifetime, players living their World Cup dreams, and visitors seeing our region at its best.

What stood out most is how smoothly YVR and our teams performed. Travellers listened to the guidance, making use of innovations such as biometric boarding. They also planned their trip to or from YVR in advance and chose transit in greater numbers. TransLink reported that Canada Line ridership from YVR increased by nearly 9 per cent during the World Cup period, an example of how YVR and our partner organizations worked collaboratively together for a greater benefit.

None of this happened by accident. Since June 2022, YVR’s dedicated cross-functional team spanning facilitation, emergency management, baggage, maintenance, communications and many other areas, planned for this moment. Working closely with Musqueam, Canada Border Services Agency, TransLink, airline partners Air Canada and WestJet, NAV CANADA, the Vancouver Host Committee and many other partners, the team ensured YVR was ready to deliver when it mattered.

To every member of the YVR team, thank you. Thank you for the early mornings, the detailed planning, the calm decision-making, the coordination behind the scenes and the warm welcome on the front lines. Together, you helped YVR meet the moment, delivering a strong seamless experience for passengers, teams and visitors.

Moody’s says the Aa2 rating reflects YVR’s very strong market position as Canada’s primary Asia-Pacific gateway and the country’s second-largest airport and key international hub. It also highlights the Airport Authority’s robust operating performance, prudent capital planning, and disciplined financial management.

The agency’s analysis notes YVR benefits from structurally strong passenger demand underpinning its long-term traffic resilience and continues to grow cargo volumes, which saw a record year in 2025 alongside the strongest passenger volumes in the airport’s history, reinforcing its position as a cargo hub. In addition, Moody’s calls out the Airport Authority’s exceptionally strong credit metrics with low leverage.

“Receiving an Aa2 public rating from Moody’s further validates the Airport Authority’s strong financial foundation, resilient operating performance, and our prudent long-term strategy,” said Clayton Buckingham, Vice President, Finance and CFO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Together with existing ratings from S&P and Morningstar DBRS, this reinforces confidence in our credit profile, supports our long-term financing strategy and broader engagement with global capital markets, and also helps position the Airport Authority to continue investing to support trade, tourism and economic growth across British Columbia and Canada.” 

The Moody’s public rating follows recent positive rating actions from S&P Global Ratings and Morningstar DBRS. In March 2026, S&P upgraded the Airport Authority’s long-term issuer credit and senior unsecured debt ratings to AA with a stable outlook, citing strong financial performance, robust passenger demand, and disciplined capital investment planning. In April 2026, Morningstar DBRS confirmed the Airport Authority’s Issuer Rating and Senior Debentures rating at AA (low) with Stable trends, supported by strong service area fundamentals, resilient traffic performance, conservative financial management, and comparatively low aeronautical fees.

We are working with the Province of British Columbia and the Canadian Council for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (C-SAF) to raise awareness about the role of SAF in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from aircraft. Our goals are to help travellers understand what SAF is and how it works, and to encourage broader adoption across the aviation sector, including with airlines operating out of YVR.

What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel?

SAF is a lower-carbon alternative to traditional fossil jet fuel. It is made from renewable and waste-derived material, such as municipal solid waste, waste fats and oils, and agricultural and forestry residue, and can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 per cent compared to fossil jet fuel.

SAF is a “drop-in” fuel. That means it can be safely blended with fossil jet fuel and used to power existing aircraft with existing airport infrastructure—no modifications required. In other words, airlines can easily pivot to using sustainable aviation fuel on their aircraft today. As a result, it’s a practical option that allows airlines to reduce their aircraft emissions right away.

Since 2024, the B.C. Low Carbon Jet Fuel Incentive Program has supported over 28.1 million litres of SAF used for flights in B.C., and interest in the program continues to grow. That’s an estimated savings of 61,000 tonnes of carbon, more than the annual emissions of about 12,000 homes in the province.

Helping reduce carbon emissions from aviation

YVR has been carbon neutral since 2020, and we’re on track to become net zero by 2030. While we don’t have direct control over the emissions generated at the airport that aren’t from our own operations, we’re committed to helping our partners achieve the aviation industry’s broader goal of net zero emissions by 2050.

Our partnership with the Province and C-SAF aims to raise public awareness and understanding of SAF through engagement and communications efforts that highlight its important role in decarbonizing aviation and supporting a more sustainable air travel system.

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has once again been named Best Airport in North America as part of the Skytrax World Airport Awards announced earlier today in London, England. YVR also stood out amongst the top airports globally, ranked 10th in Skytrax’s list of the world’s top 20 airports, an increase of three spots from 13^th in 2025, and up seven places from 2024.

Skytrax is recognized as the world’s premier international airport and aviation awards, with winners determined by votes cast by more than 13-million passengers around the globe. YVR has earned the title Best Airport in North America 15 out of the last 17 years and is the only airport ever to receive the award 15 times.

As Canada’s second busiest airport and a critical hub as Canada’s Pacific gateway to Asia and beyond, YVR served a record 26.9 million travellers and moved more than 365,000 tonnes of high value or time sensitive cargo in 2025. These are the highest volumes in the airport’s almost 95-year history and are a testament to the strength of the airport’s operations, customer service, innovations, and overall passenger experience.

As a diverse hub and vital link in global supply chain networks, YVR is an economic engine that supports jobs, trade diversification, and connectivity for British Columbia and Canada, contributing more than $15 billion annually to Canada’s GDP, and supporting more than 26,000 jobs on Sea Island as well as more than 119,000 jobs across B.C.

As Canada seeks to double exports to new and diverse global markets, YVR’s efforts to further grow air connectivity will play a critical role in getting more of Canada to the world while supporting jobs and economic growth here at home.

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is a global hub, proud to connect our local community with the world. Not only are we a gateway for travellers arriving in Vancouver for the tournament, we also provide direct access to 13 of the 16 FIFA World Cup host cities, forming a critical part of the network connecting fans to matches around the continent. 

2025 saw the highest recorded passenger numbers of our 94-year history. This summer, the growth continues, with average daily passengers from June 8 to July 12 forecasted to top 90,000, easily exceeding numbers from the same period last year.  

Preparing to welcome the world 

At YVR, preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026 began in June 2022, following the announcement of host cities.  

To ensure our operations remain resilient and reliable through this busy time, YVR has assembled a cross-functional team of experts in facilitation, emergency management, baggage, maintenance, communications, and more. This team is working alongside federal agencies operating at YVR as well as external partners such as the Vancouver Host Committee to prepare for this global event. 

Past successes in managing increased passenger volumes as part of our long-standing cruise operations program, large-scale concerts, Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025, and the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games are informing our approach.  

Specialized operations include:  

• Dedicated roles to support operations.  Specific roles assigned to oversee and organize our cross-functional teams and to liaise with FIFA volunteers and coordinators, who will work alongside our frontline ambassadors, Guest Experience Representatives and Green Coat volunteers to assist travellers.
• A 24/7 FIFA Coordination Desk to help streamline the travel process for players, referees, media, and more, and provide timely information and support across airport operations.
• Multilingual support. Travellers can easily get help in any language with our enhanced language line services, offering real-time translation for 170 languages.
• More flights. We’re working closely with our airline partners as well as private charters to meet the increased demand during this time, maximizing flights through intricate schedule coordination—“aviation Tetris,” as Vivian Chan, manager of airport capacity at YVR, calls it. 

Using technology to accelerate and streamline operations 

• YVR’s Digital Twin will help inform the work of our teams by providing real-time updates on upcoming and current airport flow conditions. Having insight into hundreds of airport systems at our fingertips will enable us to proactively address potential issues and deliver a seamless passenger experience.
• Faster, more advanced security screening. YVR was the first airport to install Computed Tomography (CT) X-ray equipment in our Domestic security screening facilities. Passengers at these checkpoints can leave large electronics and liquids in their bags, simplifying and speeding up the security screening process.
• Biometric boarding. Our new biometrics program will fast-track boarding for passengers on select flights, giving them the option of using facial comparison to verify their identity at the gate instead of showing their passport and boarding pass.
• A new High-Level Control (HLC) baggage system. Upgrades to our baggage systems will ensure faster and more reliable baggage delivery. 

Finally, we conducted major upgrades to our North Runway in 2025. Repaving, drainage and electrical upgrades, new lighting and more ensure the resilience of this critical piece of infrastructure.  

A first and last impression of Vancouver 

For the many fans travelling to Vancouver by air, YVR is the first and last touchpoint they will have with our city and region. We anticipate a sense of excitement and camaraderie throughout the terminal, supported by thematic graphics, photo moments, and signage. 

YVR’s award-winning sense of place unites the themes of land, sea, and sky. With natural elements woven throughout the interior design and an extensive collection of original Indigenous art, passing through the terminal provides a strong feeling of connection to the local area. 

Together, alongside Musqueam, we will harness the energy of this historic event to inspire our teams, engage our community, and create a lasting legacy. 

This 2.7 per cent year-over-year increase in passengers is a testament to YVR’s tireless work with airlines, tourism organizations, and other stakeholders to strengthen its position as a global hub and a critical gateway between North America, Asia, and beyond. The previous record of 26.3 million passengers was set in 2019.

By sector, domestic travel was up 3.8 per cent. Notably, for international travel, Asia Pacific passenger volumes increased 15.6 per cent year over year, while transborder traffic between YVR and U.S. destinations declined by 7.1 per cent amidst shifting global travel patterns.

On cargo shipments, 365,000 tonnes of goods moved through the airport, which represents a 7.4 per cent increase over 2024, reinforcing YVR’s key role in the local and national supply chain, particularly for high value, time sensitive, and perishable exports.

“Strong operations and customer service combined with globally recognized innovation generated record results in 2025,” said Tamara Vrooman, President and CEO of Vancouver International Airport. “I recognize and thank our outstanding YVR and Sea Island employees, our partners at Musqueam, as well as our airline customers and passengers for contributing to this achievement.”

YVR’s 2025 passenger and cargo results reflect the airport’s position as Canada’s second busiest airport and its role as a critical economic engine, contributing more than $15 billion to Canada’s GDP each year. For example, a year-round wide-body international flight, such as T’Way Airlines’ service to Seoul, South Korea, which launched last July, is estimated to generate $39.8 million in economic output, $20.8 million in GDP, and 237 full time jobs in the province.  

“Looking forward, YVR is ready to go to welcome additional flights and carriers to get more of Canada to global markets while at the same time creating jobs and opportunity here at home,” added Vrooman. “As governments look to sign new bilateral and trade agreements, we are on the ground in those emerging markets, engaged with our partners, building new relationships today to be ready for that additional growth tomorrow.”

YVR is now host to 57 airlines serving 129 non-stop destinations across the province and around the world.

Quick facts about YVR in 2025:

-         Best Airport in North America: YVR was once again voted Best Airport in North America, the 14^th time in the past 16 years, and ranked 13^th in the world’s top 20 airports by the Skytrax World Airport Awards.

-         Celebrating new airlines and destinations: YVR welcomed a variety of new and returning destinations and carriers including Air Canada to Manila and Beijing, China Southern to Guangzhou, China Eastern service to Shanghai, T’Way Airlines to Seoul, and WestJet to Liberia, Costa Rica, connecting even more of the province to the world.

-         Providing a digital-first experience with Air Canada for travellers to Canadian destinations: YVR became the first airport in Canada to install e-gates for Air Canada’s Domestic Digital ID program, which is also being expanded to U.S. departures. This allows travellers to use biometric identity verification tools rather than show boarding passes and physical identification.

-         Making security screening more seamless: YVR worked with Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) to become the first airport to install Computed Tomography (CT) X-ray equipment at the airport’s Domestic screening facilities. The new technology allows passengers to leave large electronics, such as laptops, and liquids in their bags for a faster security screening experience.

-         Delivering reliable and resilient operations: YVR continued to invest in its operations and assets, shoring up climate, digital, and physical infrastructure throughout the year, such as completing a $133 million upgrade to its North Runway.

This new flight from YVR to Japan’s Hokkaido region takes off on December 17, 2026, making it the only non-stop service between Sapporo and North America. The three-times weekly service will run seasonally until March 2027.

By adding Sapporo to its global network, Air Canada is strengthening its connections through Vancouver. This move also supports YVR’s strategy as a major Trans-Pacific hub and will enhance the deep trade, economic, and cultural ties between Canada and Japan.

Flights will operate from YVR to Sapporo’s Chitose Hokkaido Airport (CTS) onboard Air Canada’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner, including seats in Signature Class, Premium Economy and Economy.

Every new route departing from YVR results in increased economic activity and jobs for our region. The new service to Sapporo is expected to generate $6 million in economic output, $3 million in GDP, and 33 full time jobs across the province.

Throughout 2025, the North Runway Program team delivered major upgrades to lighting, drainage and electrical systems, and paved a 210mm asphalt overlay, all while keeping the runway operational during the day by performing work during the runway’s existing eight-hour nightly closure period. With the North Runway returning to full service levels as planned in October, we’re looking back on our final stage of the program – commissioning.  

While paving marked a major milestone in the program, with over 130,000 work hours, the activity did not stop there. In the fifth and final installment of our North Runway video series, follow along the busiest phase of the program – testing and commissioning the runway back to full service. 

Commissioning was the final step of the North Runway Program to ensure all systems are performing as required, from lighting to navigational aids for pilots, before the runway can return to full CAT II/III service. A full level of service ensures the runway can support safe and reliable operations in all weather conditions to meet the needs of our community and the economy that supports it.

The launch of WestJet's new direct route from YVR to Liberia marks a significant milestone, offering our community the only non-stop flight to Central America. This new connection is important because it opens doors for our community to explore new cultures, build stronger ties with Central America, and creates opportunities for businesses and shared experiences.

With the addition of this new route, YVR will now provide non-stop service to 103 global destinations for the 2025/2026 winter season, reinforcing the airport’s strategy to provide more direct connections that enhance convenience, choice, and travel experiences for our passengers.

This direct connection to Costa Rica will strengthen opportunities for travellers seeking a sunny destination during the winter season, support tourism operators, and better serve the growing Latin American community in Metro Vancouver, offering an important way to maintain personal and cultural connections abroad.

Liberia, located in the Guanacaste region, is the gateway to Costa Rica’s stunning Pacific coast beaches, lush rainforests, and iconic volcanoes. Visitors can zip-line through the canopy, soak in natural hot springs, or explore Rincon de la Vieja National Park’s trails and waterfalls. Costa Rica is also celebrated for its rich biodiversity, with sea turtles, monkeys, and colorful birds just steps away from some of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

This year, YVR matched all funds raised during the event for a total contribution of $46,761, which will help more than 3,700 British Columbians purchase groceries over the holidays.

Greetings & Giving supports Quest’s new Holiday Gift Card Program, which allows individuals and families to purchase groceries that best meet their cultural preferences, dietary needs, and holiday traditions, while also helping stock Quest’s non-profit markets.

YVR and Quest’s annual event at the airport began as a food drive in 2011 grew into a Holiday Hamper Drive, and is now designed to secure monetary donations, demonstrating a shared commitment to food security and evolving alongside the needs of the community.

The new Greetings & Giving event at YVR included festive celebrations to help drive donations, such as music, cookies, hot chocolate, and a TapSnap Photobooth. The event also included a YVR-branded holiday greeting card station, allowing participants to send a card alongside their donation.

Donations are still being accepted and can be made online. YVR will continue to match all contributions until December 31, doubling the impact.

2025 marks the 15^th year anniversary of YVR bringing together the Sea Island community during the holiday season to support families across British Columbia in partnership with Quest. Since 2011, YVR has provided Quest Outreach with nearly $1 million in grants, alongside all funds raised and in kind support.

For YVR, these new routes further strengthen regional connectivity and expand access across British Columbia. With wheeled aircraft operating in a wider range of conditions, Harbour Air reduces weather-related disruption that can impact its floatplane operations, allowing for a more consistent and reliable service for travellers. This added reliability is especially valuable for travellers planning time-sensitive trips, whether commuting for work, attending family events, or making the most of a weekend escape 

Harbour Air flights between Vancouver and Victoria operate up to 19 times daily. The new Vancouver-to-Tofino flight offers four weekly departures. The flights will be operated by Harbour Air wheeled aircraft and can carry up to 19 passengers.

From storm watching in winter to surfing in summer, this new connection supports local tourism, small businesses, and community travel, making it easier for residents and visitors to experience the magic of the west coast without the long haul. 

This new non-stop service will make it easier than ever for Canadians to head south, whether for business or a sun-soaked escape. Flair’s new route brings the total number of weekly flights from YVR to Mexico City to 24, giving travellers plenty of flexibility to plan their next adventure.  

Every new route to YVR provides important economic benefits for our community through tourism and trade. Beyond convenience, the route is expected to generate over $4.1 million in GDP and create more than 40 full-time jobs, strengthening our local economy. And for B.C.’s growing Latin American community, 78 per cent of whom live in Metro Vancouver, another non-stop service to Mexico City provides an important way for loved ones to stay connected. 

For those ready to take advantage of this new connection, Mexico City offers endless opportunities. As one of the oldest cities in the Americas, it’s home to architectural wonders like Chapultepec Castle and world-class museums such as Museo Soumaya. Travellers could easily wander through the colorful streets of Coyoacán, visit Frida Kahlo’s iconic Blue House, or simply indulge in the city’s legendary food scene.

The event featured a curated selection of Indigenous fashion inspired by Air, VIFW’s 2025 showcase theme designed by Indigenous artists including clothing by Musqueam designers Debra and Aleen Sparrow; copper jewelry by Musqueam designer Gerren Peters; and a copper chest plate, worn by Lily Gladstone at the 2024 Emmy Awards, designed by Agnes Seaweed Wisden, a YVR Art Foundation awardee. With an audience of passengers and supporters at the airport, Musqueam elders and Air Canada Indigenous crew models walked the runway in regalia and contemporary designs, amidst a Musqueam artist market with multiple vendors and live music from Musqueam DJ Merv Kelly.  

Musqueam drummers heralded the arrival of Musqueam elders and models before kicking off the festivities. Caroline Phelps, VIFW’s General Manager shared remarks alongside VIFW founder, Jolene Mitton, emphasizing the excitement leading into one of the biggest Indigenous fashion events in Western Canada next month. She also expressed how proud she was of VIFW’s growth, from its humble beginnings as a grassroots event to a multi-day fashion show for thousands of people – with the goal of celebrating Indigenous artists, designers, and performers. Quelemia Sparrow, Musqueam member, educator and multi-disciplinary artist welcomed all before the show began; followed by Alana Lawrence, Vice President Communications, Environment & Indigenous Relations at YVR; Jim Hemsworth, Manager, Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation at Air Canada; and Darnell Stager, Regional Indigenous Tourism Specialist Lead at Indigenous Tourism BC (ITBC) who emceed the event. 

Together with Musqueam and Indigenous partners, YVR was proud to provide a backdrop for the VIFW preview show and continue its commitment of providing a platform to raise Indigenous voices, profile Indigenous artists, and educate the broader community. As part of YVR’s ongoing journey of reconciliation, the airport honours its relationship with Musqueam on whose traditional ancestral and unceded territory the airport is located. 

VIFW 2025 will take place from November 19 – 22, with four separate events and a maker’s market, showcasing over 30 accomplished Indigenous fashion designers and celebrating extraordinary Indigenous creativity and culture.

In our latest episode of the North Runway video series, learn more about our airfield operations and how teams work each day to ensure safety and security during construction and a successful return to service each day. 

The work is highly complex, stretching across a vast footprint and requiring precise coordination. Preparation has been years in the making, and every evening the airfield becomes a thoughtfully orchestrated construction site. 

To ensure a safe and timely return to service, planning begins well before sundown. Each day includes a series of meetings to determine whether the night’s shift is a “go” or “no-go,” weighing weather conditions, staffing, and scope of work. Throughout the shift, check-ins keep every element of the project on track. 

By dawn, the airfield is inspected in detail by our Airfield Safety Officers who are checking for foreign object debris, verifying lighting and ensuring nothing can interfere with aircraft before returning the runway to service for the day.

YVR is currently the only airport in North America that is on track to become net zero by 2030 and continues to lead many first-of-its-kind initiatives in Canada, such as biometric security screening and boarding as well as championing accessibility measures such as sign language on all boarding gate screens.

Every new route departing from YVR results in increased economic activity and jobs in the region. The route provides business and leisure travellers a more convenient option between the two cities, strengthening Canada's energy sector, boosting the local economy, and introducing a new Canadian adventure travel destination to the market as interest in domestic travel grows.

While Fort McMurray is known for its pivotal role in Canada’s oil sands industry, the destination is an emerging setting for outdoor enthusiasts. Drive to Willow Lake for year-round fishing or Engstrom Lake to catch rainbow trout. Explore Wood Buffalo National Park, Canada’s largest National Park and designated UNESCO World Heritage site as a bird nesting area. Hike and camp among forests of white and black spruce, aspen, and balsam poplar trees. Once you’ve set up camp, look for the largest herds of wood bison in their natural habitat. At night, look up to see the Aurora Borealis (The Northern Lights) shimmer across the sky in the world’s largest Dark Sky Preserve, where the night environment is protected from the impact of artificial lighting.

Air Canada will fly between Vancouver and Fort McMurray three days per week, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, departing YVR at 15:10 and arriving in Fort McMurray at 19:00. The flight will be operated with a De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400 turboprop aircraft with 78 seats. Tickets are now available on Air Canada’s website.

Twenty four teams compromised of employees from YVR and businesses across the airport and Metro Vancouver each set out to raise funds for Hope Air, and on September 16, came together to compete for the fastest time in pulling a Q400 aircraft 75 metres. The aircraft, provided by sponsor WestJet, weighs more than 67,000 lbs. Both YVR North Runway Renegades and Kiewit FodFathers teams pulled the plane in 22 seconds, becoming the shared 2025 Haul for Hope champions. The effort is a powerful symbol of the journey many Hope Air patients must undertake to access critical medical care far from home.

“We are incredibly grateful to our hosts at YVR and to all of the teams who joined us for the third annual Haul for Hope in Vancouver,” said Mark Rubinstein, CEO of Hope Air. “The energy, teamwork, and generosity on display will have a direct impact on patients and families who rely on Hope Air to access life-saving medical care far from home.”

Hope Air is Canada’s only national charity providing support through flights, accommodations, meal vouchers and ground transportation to Canadians in financial need, who must travel to reach medical care far from home. All funds raised from this event will go towards Hope Air’s mission of ensuring no Canadian is left behind when it comes to accessing critical healthcare.

"Without Hope Air I would have gone further into debt, trying to pay for medical flights, accommodations, and travel expenses. They have lifted a huge weight off my shoulders while I battle cancer. I couldn’t be more thankful for them,” says Jennifer, Hope Air patient from Terrace, BC.

Of all funds raised during the Haul for Hope event, YVR contributed $50,000 and matched all funds raised by its six employee teams, for a total donation of over $95,000.

Last year, Hope Air completed more than 45,000 travel arrangements with YVR handling more than 62%. The number of travel arrangements is expected to reach almost 50,000 by the end of 2025.

The route is operated on a Boeing 737-500 with 122 seats. The twice-weekly service optimizes weekend travel, departing YVR every Monday and Friday at 1:25 p.m. PT and arriving in Yellowknife at 4:55 p.m. local time.

Research shows spending time with animals has therapeutic benefits such as improved mood, lower anxiety, and relaxation. Recognizing the meaningful impact animals can have to create a welcoming environment, YVR introduced the Less Airport Stress Initiative (LASI) program in 2017. 

LASI is a program designed to reduce travel anxiety and enhance well-being. Building on the program’s success with ambassador dogs, we’re expanding LASI with a new, first-of-its-kind pilot: miniature therapy ponies at the terminal. YVR is the first airport in Canada—and one of the first in North America—to trial this unique approach to passenger care.  

Miniature horses, Magic and Tinkerbell (3 and 17 years old respectively), are joining the program on a trial basis from Green Acres, a local organization dedicated to equine-assisted activities (EAA) to improve well-being. Magic and Tinkerbell are professionally trained animals experienced in high-traffic public settings such as malls, schools, and seniors’ homes, perfectly capable of charming their way into travellers’ hearts at the airport. The ponies and their handlers will make scheduled visits to YVR terminal areas throughout the summer as part of the pilot.  

This expansion is a natural next step in creating a calming airport environment, especially for families, children, and guests with accessibility needs passing through YVR.  

Since late 2023, LASI therapy dogs average around 1500 hours a year supporting passengers. They also help promote YVR at travel and trade shows and recently tested the latest dog friendly menu at the Fairmont Vancouver Airport. Not a bad gig! 

This isn’t an ordinary dog and pony show. Trained therapy animals in YVR’s LASI program are ready to provide emotional support and comfort to travellers experiencing anxiety associated with travel. So the next time you’re planning a trip to YVR, pony up a piece fruit (or hay) because Magic and Tinkerbell might just be headed your way. 

The new T’way service provides the community with even more flexibility and convenience when travelling to South Korea and connections across Asia, but the benefits of this new service go beyond passengers alone. An additional air connection provides increased cargo capacity to further diversify trading markets and get British Columbian and Canadian products to consumers in Asia and around the world. 2024 was a record-breaking year for cargo out of YVR with more than 339,000 tonnes of goods shipped through the airport and South Korea is YVR’s number two air export destination.

"British Columbia has long had strong ties with South Korea and is home to a large Korean community that continues to make significant contributions to the cultural diversity and prosperity of our province,” said B.C. Premier David Eby. “This affordable direct flight will allow people to stay connected with friends and family across the Pacific and also means that it will be faster and easier to do business with our fourth largest trading partner, strengthening the economic ties between us during a time of global uncertainty.”

Each new international route from YVR results in direct economic benefit, with the flight to Seoul estimated to generate $39.8 million in economic output, $20.8 million in GDP, and 237 full time jobs in the province.

Prior to the flight departing for its inaugural 11-hour journey, Elders from Musqueam, joined by Musqueam Councillor Morgan Guerin, helped send passengers on their journey in a good way with traditional songs and hands raised. Since 2017, this relationship has been guided by the Musqueam-YVR Sustainability & Friendship Agreement, a 30-year commitment built on respect, reconciliation, and shared prosperity. 

Flights with T’way from Vancouver to Seoul are scheduled to depart YVR at 5:25 p.m. local time arriving at ICN the next day at 9:35 p.m. local time. T’way is operating this route using an Airbus 330-300 aircraft, offering 347 seats, including lie-flat options in its Business Saver class, moving approximately 2,700 passengers weekly. 

Established in 2010, T’way Air is a low-cost carrier serving more than 40 destinations domestically in South Korea and around the globe including Europe, Asia, Australia, and now North America with the introduction of service to YVR.

WestJet's new six-hour service will operate every Friday during the 2025/2026 Winter Season, departing YVR at 12:05 a.m. Passengers will fly on a Boeing 737-800 aircraft with 174 seats.

Every new route departing from YVR results in increased economic activity. The new service to Liberia is expected to generate $700,000 in economic output and $300,000 in GDP.

Airport Workers Day was established through the Canadian Airports Council (CAC). This year, the CAC continued the celebration by presenting eight national awards to outstanding airport workers across the country. YVR’s very own Vivian Chan, Manager, Airport Capacity, received the Industry Champion Award.  

During a ceremony at YVR, we were joined by Councillor Alec Guerin from Musqueam, MP Parm Bains, MP Wade Grant, MP Chak Au, and Councillor Andy Hobbs, whose words of appreciation underscored the vital role of airport workers. Festivities continued, with more than 1,000 ice cream sandwiches distributed to workers in the terminal and an ice cream truck stationed airside.

At YVR, sustainability is at the heart of how we operate, and we are committed to finding innovative ways to reduce emissions while continuing to provide seamless transportation options for travellers. That’s why we are proud to accept the 2024 Airport Sustainability Award from Uber, recognizing our shared efforts to promote the use of Hybrid and Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) at the airport.

This achievement acknowledges YVR’s commitment to driving forward initiatives that help our partners reduce their carbon emissions. As rideshare services continue to grow in popularity, we are working closely with partners like Uber to implement policies that incentivize greener transportation choices.

A shift toward sustainability in ride hailing

The demand for rideshare services at YVR has increased over the past few years. More trips can mean a rise in emissions - especially with gasoline-powered vehicles - YVR is looking to address this challenge head on by encouraging the use of low and zero emission vehicles. YVR has introduced new fee structures that make sustainable choices like ZEVs and hybrid vehicles more accessible and attractive to travellers. Recently we implemented lower per-trip fees for ZEV and hybrid rideshare services, ensuring that fares for these options are comparable to or slightly lower than their non-green counterparts. Now, passengers leaving YVR can choose a greener option and save on fares.

A commitment to a more sustainable future

These changes represent an important step in aligning ground transportation at YVR with our broader climate commitments, and the ridesharing community agrees. Uber recognized our work and commitment by awarding YVR the 2024 Sustainability Award is a testament of that work. By incentivizing the use of Hybrid and ZEVs, investing in EV infrastructure, and supporting our rideshare partners in their sustainability journeys, we are making meaningful progress toward a cleaner and greener future.

We thank Uber for recognizing YVR’s commitment to sustainability. As we continue to evolve and refine our approach to sustainable ground transportation, we look forward to working with our partners and travelling public to create a travel experience that is both efficient and environmentally responsible.

To meet growing interest to visit the city, T’way Air, a South Korean low-cost airline, is launching non-stop service from Vancouver to South Korea’s capital beginning July 12, 2025. The new route marks T’way Air’s first and only non-stop flight to Canada.  

The new route will bring the total number of weekly flights departing YVR for Seoul to 47 year-round, providing more options for our community to travel between Canada and South Korea. British Columbia is home to the second largest Korean community in Canada, 93 per cent of which reside in Vancouver. Canada is also home to the fourth largest Korean population outside of Korea.  

The route is served by an Airbus 330-300, offering 347 seats including lie-flat options in business and premium economy.  

T’way Air’s service from YVR to ICN will run year-round, four times a week, transporting up to 1388 passengers weekly. Every new route departing from YVR results in increased economic activity and jobs for our region. The new service to Seoul is expected to generate $39.8 million in economic output, $20.8 million in GDP, and 237 full time jobs in the province. 

The newly renovated Vancouver Duty Free at YVR, which has expanded by 7,000 square feet to 30,000 square feet, spans two walkthrough locations post-security in International departures. The space features a mix of global luxury brands and local B.C. favourites, creating a unique sense of place and ensuring products for every kind of traveller as they make their way through security screening and onward to their gate.

Vancouver Duty Free is operated by Dufry, an Avolta company, and offers several brands at its YVR location that are not available at its other shops, making them exclusive to YVR within Dufry-operated duty-free stores. Brands include renowned names such as Charlotte Tilbury, NARS and fragrances by Byredo and Penhaligon via the first Haute Parfumerie.  

The new Vancouver Duty Free also offers a tasting bar showcasing Canadian-only whiskies as well as notable products from B.C wineries and distilleries, Mission Hill and Empress. The inclusion of local businesses offer travellers authentic Vancouver flavours and elevates their airport retail experience.

The Skytrax World Airport Awards are widely recognized as the global benchmark for airport excellence, based entirely on passenger feedback through the world’s largest independent customer satisfaction survey. Though, you didn’t have to be at YVR yesterday to experience the flavours of the Philippines. Hapag Ihaw Ihaw, along with five other local Filipino restaurants, were stops on YVR’s Taste of the Philippines food tour. Through Taste of the Philippines, YVR invited participants to explore these restaurants, where each stop gave participants the opportunity to win roundtrip airfare for two on this new route, courtesy of Air Canada. Participants ate their way through sizzling sisig, kare-kare, and halo-halo – so even those who didn’t win the airfare were still winners.

2. Packing pointers 
The restrictions on liquids, gels and aerosols for carry-on bags remains at 100mL. You will also want to make sure you keep them together in a clear, 1L, resealable bag. More information on what is allowed through security can be found on the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority website at catsa.gc.ca. 
 

3. Have a parking or transportation plan 
Be sure to pre-book your parking at yvr.ca/parking ahead of your trip to ensure you lock in a spot. Otherwise, consider taking the Canada Line, as it can get you from downtown Vancouver to the airport in 30 minutes or less. 
 

4. Check the status of your flight 
Skies can be all clear at YVR but winter weather in other parts of the country could impact your journey, so be sure to check the status of your flight at yvr.ca before you leave home. We also encourage you to use our Journeys tool to help plan what you are interested in seeing, doing and/or eating at YVR. 
 

5. Prep your Tech 
Before you leave your house, make sure you have all your tech set-up. Get your digital boarding pass ready, pre-load yvr.ca/travelplanning on your phone for easy reference throughout your travel journey and make sure you keep an eye on our Operational Snapshot for the most up-to-date info on security wait times, parkade capacity and more. 
 

6. Lost and Found 
Did you know the airport finds between 2,000 – 4,000 items every month? Label your belongings with your name and contact information in case you forget something at the airport. This makes it easier for our team to reunite you with your items. Similarly, use your phone’s lock screen to display an alternative contact number should you be separated from it. 
If you do end up losing something at YVR, make sure you file a claim on YVR’s website. We will do our best to help you find it. Remember, there is no cost to submit a lost and found report to YVR. Beware of scam websites asking for a fee. 
 

7. Arrive early and enjoy 
From 170 different shops, services and restaurants to our Less Airport Stress Initiative (LASI) Program, featuring St. John’s Ambulance Therapy Dogs, there are so many reasons to make sure you arrive early so you can enjoy all the airport has to offer. 
 

8. Grab a last-minute gift 
Did you know you can purchase products from the duty-free shop while you’re on the way to the airport and the collect them before boarding your flight? Secure your gifts before you fly and reserve online at Vancouver Shop Duty Free. 
 

9. Nursing rooms 
Need a place to feed or pump in private? YVR has nursing rooms and pods available throughout the airport. A list of where you can find them is available here. 
 

10. Pick up your party 
Picking up friends or family? YVR’s Cell Phone Waiting Area is a great place to wait for your loved ones to arrive. Avoid circling the terminal and enjoy this complimentary parking lot with free Wi-Fi. We also just introduced 30-min complimentary parking in our Parkade for those quick pick-up and drop-offs.
