On February 20, YVR hosted a webinar in partnership with #NotInMyCity to showcase the critical role airports play in identifying, preventing, and disrupting human trafficking. #NotInMyCity, is a leading Canadian organization dedicated to preventing and ending human trafficking and sexual exploitation through awareness, education, and coordinated action.

Held ahead of National Human Trafficking Awareness Day in Canada, February 22, the session brought together aviation partners, frontline staff, and community organizers. Speakers discussed the evolving nature of trafficking in airports, how coordinated airport networks can intervene, and the steps YVR is taking to prepare for increased passenger volumes during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

This year marks YVR’s second anniversary as a member of the Human Trafficking Prevention Network of British Columbia. Membership in the network strengthens province‑wide coordination across law enforcement, community agencies, and transportation hubs -- a critical component in reducing trafficking activity.

Since forming our partnership with #NotInMyCity in November 2023, we have continued to expand staff training, develop targeted awareness campaigns, and collaborate with airport employers and security partners to identify and report potential trafficking indicators.

To date, over 85% of Vancouver Airport Authority  employees have completed training to recognize the signs of human trafficking in the airport environment, equipping both our front line and office staff with the skills needed to respond effectively. In 2025, Securiguard joined YVR as a #NotInMyCity partner, further strengthening our collective commitment to prevention.

As global attention turns to the FIFA World Cup, YVR continues to remain a leader in safeguarding travellers and preventing human trafficking. Building on its partnership with #NotInMyCity and extensive training programs that help employees recognize and report trafficking indicators, we continue to strengthen awareness campaigns and cooperative efforts with public safety partners. These measures reflect YVR’s commitment to human rights, operational safety, and the well-being of all passengers during major international events.

Human trafficking is a complex issue that requires cross-collaborative action. At YVR, we are committed to raising awareness of human trafficking, supporting prevention efforts, and working alongside our partners to disrupt trafficking networks. By recognizing the signs of human trafficking, we can all report concerns, support individuals impacted by human trafficking, and create a safer environment for everyone.

The Lunar New Year comes as we recently announced a record year for passenger numbers in 2025 with strong growth driven in part by travel between Canada and Asia, which increased by more than 15.6% over the previous year. That momentum reflects YVR’s expanding transpacific connectivity supported by new and increased capacity to China. This includes three weekly flights with Air China and continued service from Air Canada to Shanghai and Beijing alongside ongoing service from Xiamen, Sichuan, and Hainan airlines. 

This same sense of momentum can be felt in our cargo operations. The return of Chinese capacity and growing demand from retailers like Shein and Temu have supported nearly 7.4% growth in cargo volumes in 2025, helping connect B.C. products with communities across Asia. 

Celebrations at YVR 

Building on this year of growth and connection, YVR is marking the Lunar New Year with festive celebrations throughout February. Travellers and our airport community can enjoy live music, traditional Chinese lion dances, photo moments, limited-edition products and the chance to win prizes, now through end of February.

Enjoy a traditional Lion Dance 

Join us for traditional Lion Dances! There will be two dances taking place on February 17, with performances scheduled from 11:00–11:45 a.m. at The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe and from 11:45 a.m.–13:00 p.m. at the Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel.

Due to anxiety and sensory sensitivities, individuals on the autism spectrum can become overwhelmed by the airport environment. This tour is designed to reduce anxiety, remove travel barriers, and build confidence by preparing Autistic individuals for what to expect, making the airport a less stressful and more predictable place. 

“The airport is often a very fast-paced and sensory-rich environment, which can represent a challenge for many Autistic individuals,” said Sarah Armstrong, Director of Strategic Partnerships with Canucks Autism Network (CAN). “These rehearsal events help increase predictability and decrease stress, opening up a world of possibilities for the autism community.” 

The tour includes checking-in, going through security screening with the support of CATSA, boarding an Air Canada Express aircraft, and a short taxi in the airplane. This year, more than 70 individuals ranging from 3 to 41 years old. 

Since 2014, YVR and CAN have worked together to create events and resources that increase autism accessibility in air travel. After 11 years, YVR Autism Aviation Day has reached nearly 600 attendees. 

"At YVR, we are committed to helping ensure that flying is accessible to all, and we are proud of our 11-year partnership with Canucks Autism Network to help reduce barriers to air travel for neurodiverse travellers and their families,” said Andy Margolis, Vice President, Operations and Chief Operations Officer of Vancouver International Airport. “My sincere thanks to Air Canada, CATSA, and our airport community for making this tour, and new travel opportunities, possible for hundreds of families in B.C.” 

In more recent years, YVR Autism Aviation Days have been bolstered by the support of Air Canada and Air Canada Foundation. Building off the success of the long-standing Vancouver event, they have helped deliver similar events with CAN at Victoria International Airport and Kamloops Airport. 

“We are proud to celebrate another successful Autism Aviation Day here in YVR,” said Brigitte Saint-Pierre, Director, Official Languages and Community Engagement at Air Canada. “These special days mean so much to the families who take part—helping them build confidence and familiarity with the airport and the travel process and to the employees who support the day. The positive impact of this experience extends well beyond the day itself, breaking down barriers and opening doors to future travel opportunities for children and their families. We are deeply grateful to our partners Jazz Aviation LP, CAN and YVR for helping make these meaningful moments possible.” 

In addition to the Learn to Fly tour, CAN and YVR have worked together to develop resources, like visual checklists, step-by-step instructions, and tipsheets for Autistic travelers. These resources can be accessed at any pre-security Information Counter at YVR. 

This past year, YVR also supported in the launch of an online course designed for travel industry professionals to learn about autism accessibility. Developed by CAN, the course provides an introduction to Autism and neurodiversity along with strategies for communication and support. Learn more at learn.canucksautism.ca.

From Guest Experience to front-line agents, and baggage handlers to airfield maintenance, and food services to security screening, YVR’s workforce keeps the Best Airport in North America running 24/7, 365.  

Behind every take off, every touch down and every moment in between are thousands of dedicated individuals who are moving what matters at YVR—connecting the flow of ideas, experiences, investment, people and goods and powers our ability to serve our community and the economy that supports it. This includes serving more than 26 million passengers in 2024, connecting them to 120 destinations worldwide, and supporting supply Canada’s supply chain with 339,000 tonnes of cargo.  

Airport Workers Day was established through the Canadian Airports Council (CAC). This year, the CAC continued the celebration by presenting eight national awards to outstanding airport workers across the country. YVR’s very own Vivian Chan, Manager, Airport Capacity, received the Industry Champion Award.  

During a ceremony at YVR, we were joined by Councillor Alec Guerin from Musqueam, MP Parm Bains, MP Wade Grant, MP Chak Au, and Councillor Andy Hobbs, whose words of appreciation underscored the vital role of airport workers. Festivities continued, with more than 1,000 ice cream sandwiches distributed to workers in the terminal and an ice cream truck stationed airside.

Since opening in Steveston in 1985, Pajo’s has become a West Coast institution, known for fresh seafood, sustainable practices, and unbeatable waterfront charm. In 2017, the iconic fish and chips spot landed at YVR, bringing a taste of B.C.’s dockside dining to travellers in the International Food Court. Paper Planes Café takes flight at Vancouver International Airport, marking a significant milestone in our commitment to accessibility and community engagement.

This café is not just another coffee bar; it is a testament to our dedication to creating a more inclusive and accessible travel environment. Situated in the Domestic Arrivals area on Level 2, this café represents a significant step forward in our mission to serve our people and the community. Its doors will be open for travellers from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. seven days a week.

The uniqueness of this coffee bar lies in its team, which is made up of individuals with a diverse range of abilities from the neurodiverse community. These individuals will be at the helm, brewing coffee, and serving quick snacks to the millions of passengers and guests who traverse YVR's terminal, as well as the thousands of employees who call the airport home.

The primary goal of Paper Planes Café is to empower its staff by providing them with the skills and experience they need to succeed in the workforce. Through this café, YVR and PAFN will offer up to six-months of training covering essential skills and expertise typical of the restaurant and service industry. This includes barista talents, food preparation, and customer service, all of which will prepare employees for a successful career in the hospitality field. Following the training, staff will also be supported in their job search in the community.

The innovative, impactful, and important partnership between YVR and PAFN began in 2021 with a shared vision to make travel accessible and enjoyable for everyone. As part of YVR's three-year accessibility plan, we are actively working towards creating a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible travel experience for people of all abilities.

Paper Planes Café at YVR is not just a coffee shop; it is a beacon of hope, inclusivity, and empowerment. It is a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together to make travel accessible for all, regardless of ability. So, the next time you find yourself at YVR, be sure to stop by the Paper Planes Café for a coffee and a taste of what true inclusivity feels like – because every journey, whether by air or in life, should be one that all can embark upon.

On Friday, October 13, nine teams took part in pulling one of YVR's firetrucks, Red 9, weighing 27,000 kilograms. Each team set out to fundraise a minimum of $3,500 in support of Hope Air. They went above and beyond, raising an impressive $21,500 in total! The teams went head-to-head in a friendly competition to see who could pull the firetruck the fastest, with the fastest pull time earning the 2023 Haul for Hope championship.

Taking into account fundraising efforts and the pull times, below are the winners:

• First place: High Heat Haulers 2: North Vancouver, Port Moody and Coquitlam Fire Department representatives (pull time of 28.59 seconds)
• Second place: High Heat Haulers 1: North Vancouver, Port Moody and Coquitlam Fire Department representatives (pull time of 29.11 seconds)
• Third place: YVR Mod Squad: one of three Vancouver Airport Authority teams (pull time of 37.54 seconds)

⁠Hope Air is Canada’s only national charity providing support through flights, accommodations, meal vouchers and ground transportation to Canadians in financial need, who must travel to reach medical care far from home. All funds raised from this event will go towards Hope Air’s mission of ensuring no patient is left behind when accessing vital medical care.

YVR’s commitment to the longstanding partnership with Hope Air is strengthened by shared values of serving the community, especially during times of greatest need.

The event signified the hurdles that patients from remote communities in Canada face when accessing lifesaving medical care.

Our partners at Hudson News Stores (Avolta Group) are also showing their support for Hope Air by allowing shoppers to round up their transactions, with funds raised going to Hope Air.

Currently, Hope Air has already facilitated over 16,000 travel arrangements, surpassing the annual record in the first two thirds of the year for children and families in need of medical care. The number of travel arrangements is expected to reach over 17,000 by the end of 2023.

“It’s never been more important, nor difficult, to source the groceries our communities need and want through the holiday season,” said Theodora Lamb, Executive Director at Quest. “The story of the holiday hamper is really the story of food security across British Columbia, and the global economic barriers that face it.”

According to Lamb, “the last few years have been a roller coaster when it comes to the cost of food. This year has been extra challenging for something like turkeys, given the impact of avian flu across North America, the rising cost of feed which is a direct impact of the War in Ukraine, as well as cost increases that make raising poultry more expensive than before, due to inflation. For example, the cost of turkeys has increased by 251 per cent since 2020, when we were last able to distribute them.”

The 1264 hampers that were prepared at YVR this year will help ensure approximately over 7,500 British Columbians are able to sit down for a complete meal this holiday season. As a part of the program, YVR also facilitates the distribution of these hampers.

“Serving our community is at the core of what we do, and YVR is proud to once again partner with Quest Outreach Society to help ensure families are able to enjoy a complete meal and celebrate the holiday season together,” said Tamara Vrooman, President & CEO at Vancouver Airport Authority. “A big thank you to our employees, partners and airport community for your generosity with shopping our Pop-Up Market and preparing 1264 hampers for B.C. families.”

Thanks to produce partner, BC Fresh, recipients of this year’s hampers will also receive fresh potatoes, beets, onions and carrots to go along with their locally sourced turkey. Not to mention fresh oranges and other pantry items expected on a holiday table including cranberry sauce, stuffing as well as pre- and post-dinner treats.

Together with Quest, YVR has donated more than 8,000 hampers since the start of the Hamper Drive program in 2011.
