YVR is anticipating approximately 350,000 travellers will pass through the airport between Friday, Sept. 4 and Monday, Sept. 7, averaging about 87,000 each day. The busiest days are expected to be Monday with 90,000 passengers forecast and Friday with 88,000 passengers anticipated.

With the FIFA 2026 World Cup kicking off the summer season back in June and then strong visitor and cruise traffic into Vancouver this year, the Labour Day long weekend follows what is shaping up to be a record-breaking summer travel season at YVR. Final passenger volumes will be confirmed in early fall.

YVR is also seeing strong cargo growth this year, with 13 per cent more cargo moving through the airport through July compared with the same period last year. This is being driven by strong international activity, particularly from Asia and Europe. YVR recently announced a pledge to double our air cargo volumes over the next five years.

The top 10 destinations from YVR over the Labour Day long weekend are:

Travellers coming through YVR this long weekend will also have another option to grab a bite, with YVR’s second and larger Pret A Manger location opening August 31st post-security in the Domestic Terminal, near Gate B17.

Passengers can also help make their journey smoother this busy long weekend by confirming flight details with their airline or at yvr.ca before heading to the airport. Those driving to YVR are encouraged to reserve parking in advance and give themselves adequate driving time, particularly during peak travel periods.

People will also notice the following YVR innovation investments to help make for a seamless journey from curbside to gate:

• Computed Tomography (CT) X-ray equipment at both Domestic checkpoints allows domestic travellers to save time by leaving large electronics, such as laptops, and liquids in their bags for a faster security screening experience.
• Travellers also have more opportunities to use biometric identity verification tools instead of showing boarding passes and physical identification, with United Airlines now joining the biometrics program and YVR reaching a key milestone of 500,000 passengers boarded using biometrics so far this year. This includes Air Canada’s Digital ID program for domestic flights and newly installed e-gates for those travelling to the U.S. via U.S. Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) Traveller Verification Service (TVS) facial comparison technology.

Operations have returned to normal following significant thunderstorms that moved through the region Saturday evening into Sunday morning, impacting flights at YVR.

Safety is our top priority and when lightning is in direct proximity of the airport, airfield operations must be paused for the safety of our employees and passengers. The duration and intensity of the storm meant that from 9:30 p.m. Saturday to 2:55 a.m. Sunday, flights could not depart YVR and many arriving flights were unable to taxi to the gate once landed. This resulted in flight delays and some cancellations.

YVR and our partners activated our terminal response team and called in additional staff from across the airport community to support passengers.

Some flights continued to be impacted Sunday at YVR. We worked closely with our airline partners to support recovery of their schedule and get passengers on their way as quickly as possible.

We continue to encourage travellers to check the status of their flight with their airline before coming to the airport.

This upgrade work will take place overnight from September 14 through December 31.

During this period, the Dinsmore Bridge will be closed to all traffic nightly from Sunday to Friday between the hours of 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Traffic will be detoured via the No. 2 Rd. Bridge, a 6-minute detour.

The planned overnight closure and designated detour route will allow essential maintenance to be completed while supporting continued access to Sea Island for airport operations, employees, and the travelling public. Outside of the closure hours, the speed limit will be reduced to 30 km/h.

Musqueam Territory / Richmond, B.C. (August 19, 2026): As part of its commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has launched a new tool for passengers to be part of the transition to a lower-carbon aviation industry. YVR’s online calculator allows travellers to estimate their flight’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and contribute to the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Contributions made through YVR’s new online calculator will be applied to environmental attributes associated with SAF and will enable airlines’ further use of SAF, starting with Air Canada. SAF’s environmental attributes are the quantified climate benefits or reductions associated with its use, such as the GHG emissions avoided by not extracting non-renewable resources used for fossil jet fuel. Contributing to these attributes supports SAF growth and is essential for scaling SAF globally, as it bolsters activity across the supply chain.

“Sustainable Aviation Fuel is one of the most effective options available today to make meaningful progress towards decarbonizing aviation. This new tool gives travellers the opportunity to help increase the use of SAF and support more sustainable air travel,” said Tamara Vrooman, President & CEO at Vancouver International Airport.

SAF is a lower-carbon alternative to fossil jet fuel. It is made from renewable and waste-derived materials and, depending on the feedstock, production pathway and lifecycle-assessment methodology, can have lower lifecycle GHG emissions than fossil jet fuel. Certain SAF may achieve lifecycle GHG reductions of up to 80 per cent when used in neat form compared with fossil jet fuel. As a “drop-in” fuel, it can be blended with fossil jet fuel and requires no changes to today’s aircraft or existing airport infrastructure.

While SAF is currently in use by some airlines, including those operating at YVR, as an emerging fuel source, limited production and higher prices are obstacles for wider uptake. As production increases and more supply becomes available, costs are likely to lower, increasing the proportion of SAF to be likely used in flights around the world.

This initiative is part of YVR’s broader efforts to raise awareness of SAF and support airline partners in increasing their SAF use to advance the aviation industry’s goal of net zero emissions by 2050. While voluntary contributions through YVR’s online calculator help support the broader adoption of SAF by Air Canada over time, the tool is available to all passengers regardless of which airline they travel on.

WestJet Encore flights operated on Q400 aircraft, as well as codeshare flights operated by airline partners, remain unaffected.

WestJet passengers are advised to check the latest flight information with the airline before coming to the airport, as some schedule changes may continue as the airline returns to regular operations.

YVR is forecasting to see the highest number of travellers of the long weekend on Friday, July 31 with 91,200 passengers. From July 31 to August 3, 340,400 total travellers are expected with an average of 85,100 per day.

As the first half of the summer was dominated by FIFA World Cup 2026 activities in Vancouver, YVR continues to see a busy summer travel season. The airport is expecting an average of 85,300 travellers daily between June 12 and September 8 with a total of 7.6 million travellers over the period. 

YVR asks travellers to check their flight status with their airline and at yvr.ca ahead of coming to the airport. Travellers are also encouraged to the airport to prebook their parking in advance.

During the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June and July 2026, our airport and our city had the privilege of welcoming the world to Vancouver. For many players, officials, fans, and other World Cup visitors, YVR was their first impression of British Columbia, and, for many, it won’t be their last. That is a responsibility we took seriously, and a responsibility our team met with pride, professionalism, and care.

YVR welcomed a total of ten teams over the course of the tournament. From the moment the players stepped off their aircraft and onto our airfield, British Columbia hospitality was on full display. Each team was welcomed by Musqueam representatives upon landing, beginning their time here in a good way and reminding all of us that major global events are also moments to honour place, partnership, and community.

YVR exists to serve our community and the economy that supports it. During the games period, that purpose was especially visible. Nearly 2.8 million passengers travelled through YVR during the games period from June 8 to July 10, with an average of more than 86,000 travellers each day. Our busiest day approached 92,000 passengers. Behind those numbers are real moments. Families arriving for the match of a lifetime, players living their World Cup dreams, and visitors seeing our region at its best.

What stood out most is how smoothly YVR and our teams performed. Travellers listened to the guidance, making use of innovations such as biometric boarding. They also planned their trip to or from YVR in advance and chose transit in greater numbers. TransLink reported that Canada Line ridership from YVR increased by nearly 9 per cent during the World Cup period, an example of how YVR and our partner organizations worked collaboratively together for a greater benefit.

None of this happened by accident. Since June 2022, YVR’s dedicated cross-functional team spanning facilitation, emergency management, baggage, maintenance, communications and many other areas, planned for this moment. Working closely with Musqueam, Canada Border Services Agency, TransLink, airline partners Air Canada and WestJet, NAV CANADA, the Vancouver Host Committee and many other partners, the team ensured YVR was ready to deliver when it mattered.

To every member of the YVR team, thank you. Thank you for the early mornings, the detailed planning, the calm decision-making, the coordination behind the scenes and the warm welcome on the front lines. Together, you helped YVR meet the moment, delivering a strong seamless experience for passengers, teams and visitors.

Winners are selected based on having the lowest annual noise level, as measured by YVR’s Aircraft Noise & Operations Monitoring System, and compliance with YVR’s Noise Abatement Procedures. The awards are presented in three categories—propeller, narrow-body jet, and wide-body jet —to reflect the different noise profiles associated with each aircraft type.

Emily first joined the airport community in 2009 and, after serving in a variety of roles, joined YVR’s Guest Experience team in 2023. Since then, she has become known for approaching every challenge as an opportunity to improve the passenger experience. 

When Emily took the lead in supporting YVR's Lost and Found program, she worked closely with her team to understand pain points, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement practical solutions that better serve our passengers. Her collaborative approach reflects YVR's value of teamwork: listening first, supporting others, and working together to deliver meaningful results. 

YVR exists to serve our community and the economy that supports it, and Emily brings that purpose to life through everyday acts of care and compassion. She leads with integrity and consistently goes above and beyond for both passengers and colleagues.

“This aircraft is really important to us because it gives us a real high fidelity training object we can work on,” said Greydon Ratushny, Fire Chief with YVR Fire & Rescue. “This gives us first-hand training for the real-world challenges that could come about when working with an aircraft that can’t be replicated in commercial-ready props.”

The Pacific Coastal aircraft will be used along with YVR’s existing Fokker F28 in many different scenarios including aircraft fires, onboard smoke conditions, and removing patients from an aircraft. Having access to different aircraft types helps create more realistic conditions so teams can practice the skills they rely on in real-world situations. This ongoing work is an important part of maintaining safe, reliable and resilient operations across the airport.

The donated aircraft is also a great example of how YVR works with airline partners to build greater readiness across our airport community.

“We saw this as a natural fit for us to donate a retired fuselage for YVR Fire & Rescue so they could simulate their training for their emergency response,” said Darcy Coonfer, Vice President, Operations at Pacific Coastal Airlines. “We’re extremely proud to provide a tool like that. We know how important it is to train under realistic situations. This is just a continuation of a really good, long-standing partnership.”

Safety is a shared responsibility at YVR. By continuing to invest in regular training and working closely with partners like Pacific Coastal Airlines, we are helping ensure our teams are prepared, our plans are tested and our airport community remains ready.

Its opening at YVR marks the first standalone Pret A Manger in B.C. and the first in a Canadian airport. The launch also reflects YVR’s ongoing commitment on expanding food and beverage offerings, convenience, and service for every traveller. Known for its freshly prepared food and quick service, Pret has built a strong international following. Open 24 hours a day, the location is designed to match the pace of airport life, whether someone needs breakfast before an early flight, a quick lunch during work, or a snack on the go. From sandwiches and wraps to salads, baked goods, organic coffee, and a wide range of vegetarian and vegan options, Pret offers something accessible for just about everyone.

The opening is also part of Pret’s broader Canadian airport expansion, with four new locations planned across YVR and Toronto Pearson International through 2026. That growth reflects increasing demand for fresh, high‑quality, and convenient food options in airport settings. In a fast-moving airport environment, its arrival adds something fresh, recognizable, and a little special for both travellers and airport staff.

That sense of anticipation is what makes Pret’s debut at YVR feel less like a routine opening and more like a welcome new addition to the journey.

As the first of three Pret A Manger locations set to open at YVR this year, this debut signals an exciting expansion of choice across the terminal and a warm welcome for a globally loved brand.

All of which makes Pret’s debut at YVR feel like a natural addition to the airport’s offerings, one that travellers can look forward to experiencing on their next trip.

Anyone who has ever stood at a carousel watching it spin with no bags has asked themselves the same question: When will my luggage arrive?  

As part of our commitment to providing a seamless passenger experience, we improved the Baggage Information Display (BID) screens in our Arrivals areas. The goal: Give passengers arriving at YVR clearer, more meaningful updates while they wait for their bags to show up. 
 

Unpacking the data on baggage delivery 

As a passenger, baggage delivery can feel mysterious. You feed your belongings onto a conveyor belt and watch them disappear into the inner workings of the airport, only to emerge hours later on a baggage carousel in a completely different airport.  

Behind the scenes, airline personnel and infrastructure like YVR’s High-Level Control (HLC) baggage system are working to deliver your bag at the expected place and time. Thanks to ground handler delivery standards and historical data, YVR can predict your bag’s arrival time with a reasonable degree of accuracy. But until now, that information wasn’t accessible to passengers. 

Three things you’ll notice at the carousels 

Next time you pick up your bag after a flight into YVR, keep an eye out for these changes. 
 

• A countdown until bags start to arrive. The new displays show a reverse countdown based on your flight’s arrival time.

• Accessible design. Designers collaborated with our Accessibility team on aspects like contrast and sizing to ensure readability for passengers with visual impairment considerations. Clear graphics communicate the message to passengers who do not speak English or French.

• A clear indication of what stage baggage delivery is in, from unloading to processing to delivered. When the last bag has arrived, the screen says so. If your bag isn’t there, there’s no need to keep waiting—head to the nearest airline counter for assistance. 
   

A commitment to improving passenger experience 

YVR strives to deliver a streamlined experience for everyone travelling through our terminals. Our latest improvements to our Baggage Information Display System are just one way we’re putting passengers first.

Moody’s says the Aa2 rating reflects YVR’s very strong market position as Canada’s primary Asia-Pacific gateway and the country’s second-largest airport and key international hub. It also highlights the Airport Authority’s robust operating performance, prudent capital planning, and disciplined financial management.

The agency’s analysis notes YVR benefits from structurally strong passenger demand underpinning its long-term traffic resilience and continues to grow cargo volumes, which saw a record year in 2025 alongside the strongest passenger volumes in the airport’s history, reinforcing its position as a cargo hub. In addition, Moody’s calls out the Airport Authority’s exceptionally strong credit metrics with low leverage.

“Receiving an Aa2 public rating from Moody’s further validates the Airport Authority’s strong financial foundation, resilient operating performance, and our prudent long-term strategy,” said Clayton Buckingham, Vice President, Finance and CFO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “Together with existing ratings from S&P and Morningstar DBRS, this reinforces confidence in our credit profile, supports our long-term financing strategy and broader engagement with global capital markets, and also helps position the Airport Authority to continue investing to support trade, tourism and economic growth across British Columbia and Canada.” 

The Moody’s public rating follows recent positive rating actions from S&P Global Ratings and Morningstar DBRS. In March 2026, S&P upgraded the Airport Authority’s long-term issuer credit and senior unsecured debt ratings to AA with a stable outlook, citing strong financial performance, robust passenger demand, and disciplined capital investment planning. In April 2026, Morningstar DBRS confirmed the Airport Authority’s Issuer Rating and Senior Debentures rating at AA (low) with Stable trends, supported by strong service area fundamentals, resilient traffic performance, conservative financial management, and comparatively low aeronautical fees. 

As Canada’s Pacific Gateway to Asia and beyond, Vancouver International Airport is a strategic connecting hub and a key economic driver for the region and Western Canada. In 2025, YVR moved a record 26.9 million passengers and nearly 365,000 tonnes of cargo, up 7.4 per cent from the previous year. YVR was also recently named Skytrax Best Airport in North America for a record 15^th year as well as being rated in the top 10 of all airports globally.  

As the primary gateway for fans, teams, officials, and media travelling to and from the tournament, YVR will serve as the first and final impression of Vancouver and British Columbia for FIFA visitors from around the world. This comes at the same time as YVR is also preparing for summer travel, including supporting a forecasted record cruise season out of the Port of Vancouver. To ensure a resilient, reliable operation and a leading passenger experience, YVR has spent the past four years planning with a variety of partners including Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), TransLink, the Vancouver Host Committee, Destination Vancouver, RCMP, Musqueam, and many more.  

Between June 8 and July 12, passenger volumes are expected to hit 2.7 million or an average of nearly 88,000 per day, exceeding the same period in 2025, which was a record year for YVR. This represents a 5-10 per cent increase in passenger volumes over last year. The highest passenger volumes are expected in the days before and after a match.

To support the unique operational demands of the FIFA World Cup, YVR has established dedicated roles to coordinate with FIFA volunteers and event organizers, ensuring seamless movement for accredited groups as well as a smooth journey for other passengers.

A 24/7 FIFA Coordination Desk is now active, providing real‑time support for players, officials, media, and other credential travellers. In partnership with RCMP and security partners, YVR has also significantly increased security measures and staffing for the duration of the event.

In order to ensure a resilient, reliable operation to meet passenger and event demands, YVR has accelerated key innovations to increase capacity, improve flow, and enhance the overall passenger experience.

• Additional new CT screening technology has been installed at all Domestic and International CATSA screening points as well as connecting checkpoints and installation is under way at U.S. Departures as well, eliminating the need to remove large electronics and small liquids from carry‑on bags.
• YVR’s biometric and facial comparison boarding program has also been expanded to include 42 biometric‑enabled gates now in place, including 28 full e‑gates. In addition to being more convenient for travellers, this enables boarding up to 13 per cent faster and has supported an increase in on-time departures even when an aircraft arrives behind schedule.

As Vancouver gets ready to host one of the world’s biggest sporting events, YVR is prepared to welcome visitors with efficiency, safety, and the region’s signature hospitality.

• Stay informed: Check the status of your flight with your airline or at yvr.ca before coming to the airport.
• Check travel documents: Ensure passports and all travel identification are valid.
• Pre-book your parking at yvr.ca/parking.
• Consider taking transit, including enhanced Canada Line service as well as taxis or rideshare. Pick up areas at International & Domestic Arrivals, Level 2.
• Enjoy the FIFA 2026 experience at YVR with fan activations, exclusive merchandise, and the ability to watch match action at venues across the terminal.

The new plan builds on the progress of Beyond Accessibility, YVR’s comprehensive three‑year Accessibility Plan (2023–2025). Co‑created with YVR’s community and accessibility partners, Beyond Accessibility provided the framework for creating a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible travel experience for people of all abilities and helped ensure predictable, stress‑free journeys for passengers.

Over the past three years, YVR has advanced major commitments from its first plan. Recent initiatives include launching the Travel Rehearsal Program, expanding quiet spaces to U.S. and Domestic terminals, and adding sign language boarding messaging on gate information display screens. This year, YVR was also re-certified with the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification™ (RHFAC) Gold rating, recognizing the airport’s continued leadership in accessibility and inclusive design.

Building on this foundation, the 2026–2029 Accessibility Plan was shaped through extensive consultation with accessibility partners, customers, employees, and airport organizations. Over the next three years, YVR will focus on enhancing quiet spaces throughout the terminal, completing CATSA Plus upgrades at security screening points, and strengthening inclusive communications, including a refresh of our accessibility page. Work will also include expanding tactile warning surface indicators at the top of stairs, testing cane-detectable stanchions, enhancing curbside‑to‑gate support and continuing to install automated push-button door openers in our private, single stall washrooms.

Ensuring YVR is accessible to all continues to be a top priority across the travel experience. Universal access is also embedded into every expansion and infrastructure project at the airport.

On May 21, 2026, YVRAF announced the recipients of their 2026 scholarships, comprising eight emerging artists and two mid-career artists. Artists apply with a specific project in mind, then craft that work over the course of the coming year with the financial support, mentorship, and programs of study offered as part of the scholarship. Finished works are displayed at YVR for a period of one year before an opportunity to exhibit at a partner gallery.
