The memorandum of understanding between the two airports is focused on seven different areas of collaboration, including innovation to further support efficient airport operations through the use of technology. This includes work around YVR’s Digital Twin as well as emerging tools and potential innovation pilot projects that could be jointly developed or trialled between the YVR and BLR teams. The agreement also lays out efforts to further the transit of air cargo between Canada and Southern India, particularly when it comes to supporting growing industries such as the tech sector in the two regions, as well as an ultimate goal of developing direct air service between YVR and BLR.

The agreement was celebrated at an event in Terminal 2 of BLR Airport and attended by senior representatives from both airports as well as the Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Canada’s Minister of International Trade.

“This agreement highlights the growing importance of the Canada–India corridor and the need for stronger collaboration across the aviation ecosystem to support passengers, cargo, and trade. The partnership between YVR and Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru is a practical example of that approach in action,” said Albert van Veen, Vice President of Innovation and Chief Information Officer, Vancouver International Airport. “By working together, both airports are exploring ways to improve the passenger journey while enhancing operational efficiency and resilience, not to mention supporting continued travel and trade growth between our two countries.”

Two-way trade between Canada and India was valued at more than $10.9 billion in 2025 alone, with both governments working to grow volumes considerably in the coming years. British Columbia is home to one of the largest Indian diasporas in the world, comprising nearly 500,000 people and representing close to 10 per cent of B.C.’s population. Meanwhile, Bengaluru has seen considerable population growth with a rapidly growing tech sector and increasing business-to-business connections with Western Canada and the Western United States.

YVR is coming off a record year in 2025, with 26.9 million passengers travelling through the airport and the movement of 365,000 tonnes of cargo, up 7.4 per cent from 2024. The airport is set to eclipse those numbers in 2026 with a continued increase in passenger traffic and double-digit growth in cargo volumes. This was accomplished thanks to strong operations and customer service combined with globally recognized innovation. YVR was recently voted Best Airport in North America by Skytrax for a record 15^th year and named as one of the top 10 airports globally. YVR also recently announced a commitment to doubling air cargo volumes in the next five years in support of diversifying trade and getting more of Canada to global markets.

BLR also celebrated a strong 2025, with 44.47 million passengers including a 23.9 per cent increase in international passengers. The airport moved 532,000 tonnes of cargo last year, up 6 per cent year over year, and is India’s leading gateway for perishable exports. BLR’s Terminal 2 is the first and only airport terminal in India to receive the prestigious 5-Star Airport Terminal Rating from Skytrax.

Six more flights a week are being added at YVR this fall. By the end of October, travellers will have a choice of 32 weekly flights between Vancouver and mainland China. That means more options for people visiting family and friends, travelling for business or planning a holiday as well as additional service to get high-value BC products to export markets abroad.

Canada and China agreed to the six additional weekly flights during Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to Beijing earlier this year. Air China’s additional flights began September 27. China Southern Airlines will add flights on October 25 and Xiamen Airlines on October 29.

Once the added flights are in place by the end of October, YVR’s mainland China service will include 32 weekly flights:

· Air China: five flights a week, an increase of two

· China Southern Airlines: four flights a week, an increase of two

· Xiamen Airlines: three flights a week, an increase of one

· Sichuan Airlines: two flights a week

· China Eastern Airlines: two flights a week

· Beijing Capital Airlines: one flight a week

· Hainan Airlines: one flight a week

· Air Canada Vancouver–Beijing: seven flights a week

· Air Canada Vancouver–Shanghai: seven flights a week

More connections are coming beyond China too. Air Canada will launch nonstop winter service between Vancouver and Sapporo, Japan, on December 17, with three flights a week through March 2027. Its seasonal service to Osaka is scheduled to resume on February 2, 2027, about a month earlier than 2025, giving travellers more time to explore Japan. Together with the new Guangzhou route planned for May 2027, these additions further expand Air Canada’s growing trans-Pacific network from YVR.

The additional widebody flights also provide more cargo capacity, helping B.C. and Canadian exporters get their products to new customers across the Aia Pacific region. In fact, YVR’s cargo volumes rose 13 per cent this summer compared to 2025, and the airport is on track for yet another record-setting cargo year.

Weather is one of the most significant factors when it comes to flight operations. Because safety is our top priority, conditions like heavy rain, fog, and wind that lead to lower visibility at the airport require our YVR teams to be flexible and responsive.

In the simplest terms, visibility refers to how well and how far you can see around you. In aviation, visibility is measured based on how far away a pilot can see and recognize the runway. This is called Runway Visual Range (RVR). Reduced visibility operations (RVOP) kick in when pilots can only see the runway or runway lights from a distance of 2,640 feet or less. To put that into perspective, that’s like standing at BC Place and judging whether you can see Science World across False Creek. Low visibility operations (LVOP) are triggered when visibility drops to below 1,320 feet or the equivalent of about four Vancouver city blocks.

Like most major airports, YVR has specialized procedures and the latest aviation technology to help keep aircraft moving safely and getting you on your way even in reduced visibility or low visibility situations. We also work closely with NAV CANADA, the country’s air navigation service provider, to adjust the rate of arrivals and departures when needed. Just as drivers allow more space between them and the vehicle ahead in inclement weather, the same goes for aircraft. As a result, fewer planes may be able to land or takeoff per hour in reduced and low visibility conditions. This may cause delays or other impacts to flight schedules.

However, when visibility drops below 600 feet, or when lightning is detected in the immediate vicinity of the airport, safety dictates that take-offs and landings may need to be paused until conditions improve. This is known as a ground stop. These are rare, but when they do happen, please know they are for your safety and that of your fellow passengers, workers, and crew.

So, as we bid goodbye to summer weather, we recommend passengers always check the status of their flight with their airline or on yvr.ca before arriving at the airport, and to give themselves plenty of time to get to the airport safely in the event of inclement weather.

The effort to pull a 67,000lb-aircraft is a powerful symbol of the journey many Hope Air patients must undertake to access critical medical care far from home.

Devon was diagnosed with acute advanced Crohn’s disease at age 11 and continues to travel from Kamloops to BC Children’s Hospital for specialized care. Shortly after, Vanessa was diagnosed with Stage 3 uterine cancer, leaving the family managing two serious medical conditions while travelling for treatment. Hope Air-supported flights and ground transportation have helped reduce travel time, costs, stress and missed school days.

“Hope Air came at a critical time for our family,” said Vanessa. “Flying to medical appointments rather than driving meant more time for work, school, friends and family. That gave Devon more time to be a boy and for us to be a family.”

All funds raised from Haul for Hope will go towards its mission of ensuring no Canadian is left behind when it comes to accessing critical healthcare.

The team from Neptune Terminals pulled the plane in 32.93 seconds, becoming the 2026 Haul for Hope champions. YVR matched all funds raised by its four employee teams, for a total donation of over $39,000.00.

Safety is YVR’s top priority and a responsibility the airport takes seriously for the 28,000 people who work in various roles at YVR, and the more than 26 million travellers it welcomes annually.  

This year’s exercise was attended by more than 400 participants from 25 agencies, simulated an aircraft emergency at the airport, and involved a coordinated response from partners both at YVR and throughout the Lower Mainland. 

Passengers and visitors may have noticed exercise-related activity on the airfield and in the terminal between approximately 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on September 15. Exercise participants and volunteers portrayed distressed or injured individuals as part of the training scenario. All participants were clearly identified with vests, and signs were posted throughout the airport to notify passengers of the exercise. 

Hosting full-scale exercises is a key component of YVR’s Emergency Management Program and is required by Transport Canada. In addition, YVR conducts tabletop exercises, training sessions, and smaller emergency drills throughout the year. 

These activities required extensive collaboration across airport teams, emergency responders, airlines, government agencies, and other partners. By training together regularly and in realistic scenarios, YVR is able to test procedures, strengthen coordination, and enhance preparedness to help ensure the airport community is ready to respond to any situation at YVR safely and effectively. 

Airport operations were not affected by this exercise.

I was entering the parking lot at YVR when I heard news on the radio about an aircraft crash in New York. It was just before 0600. I went directly to our Operations Centre (where I knew there was a TV) in time to join our Shift Manager (Superintendent Airport Operations was their title at that time) and watched the second plane crash into the towers.

I was attending the SWIFT conference in Calgary, Alberta. I was still in my room preparing for the day when I turned on the news. Seeing the extent of the damage, it was hard to believe. At this point I thought perhaps a small business or recreational aircraft had been involved (my mind wasn’t going toward a coordinated terrorist attack at that stage). As I was watching, the second aircraft struck. I went downstairs to the conference floor and met up with the Superintendent Airfield Operations (Arnie Jassmann) who was also in attendance. They were showing the news on the conference floor big screen, and people were standing around in disbelief.

I was working in Human Resources at YVR on September 11, 2001. My role that day quickly became much less about my regular job and much more about helping wherever I was needed. And I was needed most in the terminal, helping people.

I was just about to leave for work when I received a call from the OPS Shift Manager advising that two planes had crashed into the World Trade Center and that it was not believed to be accidental. I was waiting for the words “exercise, exercise”, but they didn’t come.

September 11, 2001, was actually my eighth wedding anniversary and the fourth day of my scheduled time off. I first became aware that something extraordinary had happened when my home phone rang shortly before 7 a.m. It was my father-in-law. His first question was, “Why aren't you at work?”

That’s when it really hit us, it’s going to be massive chaos in the arrivals hall and baggage hall. So at that point, we were like, “All hands on deck. Put our pens down. Put on our vest and get on the floor with everybody else.”

We had people from our offices who came to help our regular Airport Operations Agents to answer the telephone as we were getting so many phone calls from all over the world, people looking for their loved ones and which airport they had gone to.

At 0645 PDT the Federal Aviation Administration ordered the complete closure of U.S. airspace. All commercial and private planes already in the air were ordered to land immediately at the nearest available airport as part of Operation Yellow Ribbon. For many aircraft and thousands of people, this was YVR.

BP: Once notified that airspace was closing and aircraft would be diverting to us, we immediately put a team on the task of developing an aircraft parking plan.

GS: I looked up and saw a Korean Air 747 being escorted by two Canadian fighter aircraft. Looking north, I could see what appeared to be a highway in the sky, large aircraft circling over the Lower Mainland while awaiting opportunities to land.

DM: Once the order came down to land all the airplanes they had to land. So we ended up seeing all kinds of tails here we hadn’t seen before.

BM: Only passengers and their carry-ons were offloaded from the diverted planes. All checked luggage had to be hand searched by Police and K9. By around 1000 PDT there were more than 100 RCMP on-site. On a typical day back then there were six. Most of the diverted passengers had no idea that they had landed in Vancouver.

DS: As we approached [runway] 08R, we could see aircraft parked in every available space around the airfield – I’ve never seen so many on the ground at one time. Even more strange was the absolute lack of activity – anywhere on the airfield.

BP: Our VP of Operations was on the airfield with a headset and plugging into aircraft to speak with the flight crew and explain what had happened and what we were doing to assist them and their passengers. Most did not know why they were instructed to land at YVR – there weren’t any smartphones in 2001 nor was their live TV on the aircraft.

DP: YVR is normally such a noisy place. You hear the roar of aircraft engines on takeoff and the loud thunder of brakes and engines as aircraft land. That day, that familiar rhythm of aircraft movements suddenly stopped — apart from the remarkable parade of diverted aircraft arriving at YVR. It was such a strange contrast: an airport accustomed to the constant movement of aircraft, suddenly standing still in a way I had never experienced before.

DS: When we disembarked, I was on the phone with Brett and was asked to report into the operations center to assist with the logistics of individually moving each aircraft systematically to a remote area on the airfield where the baggage could be removed and inspected for explosives by the RCMP.

BM: Many of the carriers that diverted here had no staff presence at YVR. There was no one to assist them in getting accommodation, so we stepped in. We worked with Tourism Canada to find rooms for everyone, some as far away as Hope. At the same time, our Operations Center was receiving thousands of calls from the general public offering rooms, apartments, etc.

At 1106 PDT the Canadian government officially closed all Canadian airspace in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This meant all departing flights from YVR were cancelled and the terminal and surrounding roads were quickly filled with people needing assistance.

BM: RCMP put up roadblocks to ensure no additional people could come to YVR.

GS: I immediately began working with various internal departments to coordinate the deplaning of passengers, the screening of their baggage, and the inspection of aircraft. At the same time, we were trying to determine how we would manage operations in the days ahead. It quickly became apparent that this would not be a short-term event. Most, if not all, of the operational initiatives that were stood up that day had never previously existed.

BM: We had conference calls with Transport Canada every two hours to discuss changing regulations and what a re-opening of airspace might look like. We also had briefings with all the air carriers 3-4 times a day.

GS: A curbside queuing plan was created to manage and feed passengers into the terminal, again without any existing model to follow. Space was also designated at the curbside for organizations such as the Salvation Army to provide support and food services to stranded passengers and airport employees, an arrangement that had never previously existed. In addition, a program was established to connect stranded travelers with members of the public willing to offer temporary accommodation in their homes, another unprecedented initiative. These examples represent only a portion of the extraordinary measures that were conceived, developed, and implemented in real time.

DP: There was so much uncertainty. People were waiting, not knowing when the airspace would reopen or what was going to happen next. And yet I don't remember a single angry person.

There was a real sense of connection between the passengers and between the passengers and the airport community. People were patient with one another. They shared stories. They helped each other. In a situation that could have so easily become chaotic and frightening, there was an incredible sense of togetherness.

I also remember how quickly people stepped up to help. Employees were doing whatever was needed, regardless of their normal roles. The focus was simply on looking after people and supporting the operation.

On September 12, Canadian airspace slowly permitted limited domestic and essential flights to resume. YVR shifted into recovery.

BM: Once the airspace restrictions were eased, people started coming in droves to the airport. There were so many people that we had to queue people on the curb. When we ran out of space on the curb, we relocated cars from the top level of the parkade and created queueing space for domestic and international passengers.

I was responsible for the volunteers that assisted with wayfinding, answering questions, handing out everything from blankets, sunscreen, granola bars, water etc. Many of the volunteers were Airport Authority staff, but also their friends and family. We also had volunteers from the Lower Mainland communities that just wanted to help. The Salvation Army was onsite to provide food and water for everyone.

GS: When our backs were against the wall, people stepped up, adapted, and accomplished what was required, even in the absence of established plans or procedures. That experience demonstrated the professionalism, resilience, and dedication of the team under extraordinary circumstances.

DS: What stands out that day is definitely the teamwork, the resolve, and the mutual support. The “What do you need and how can I help” attitude that prevailed through these very difficult circumstances. We stood as one, and we cared for each other.

BP: We cemented the fact that we are a community airport that day.

DP: I think September 11 taught me that in a very tangible way. In the middle of an unprecedented situation, people didn't necessarily need someone to have all the answers. They needed someone to help them, to listen, to point them in the right direction, and to remind them that they weren't dealing with it alone.

DM: Looking back on it, you do remember the good parts of it. But it was the same group of people working together the same way we do today for Vancouver Airport.

A total of 34 aircraft carrying 8,500 passengers, more than any other Canadian airport, were diverted to YVR on September 11, 2001.

Now 25 years later, many of the operational plans and crisis response protocols remain in place at YVR and the events of that day have shaped our airport community and the aviation industry immeasurably. What also remains is the memory of the lives that were lost and the extraordinary community efforts to keep people safe and comfortable in uncertain times.

YVR is anticipating approximately 350,000 travellers will pass through the airport between Friday, Sept. 4 and Monday, Sept. 7, averaging about 87,000 each day. The busiest days are expected to be Monday with 90,000 passengers forecast and Friday with 88,000 passengers anticipated.

With the FIFA 2026 World Cup kicking off the summer season back in June and then strong visitor and cruise traffic into Vancouver this year, the Labour Day long weekend follows what is shaping up to be a record-breaking summer travel season at YVR. Final passenger volumes will be confirmed in early fall.

YVR is also seeing strong cargo growth this year, with 13 per cent more cargo moving through the airport through July compared with the same period last year. This is being driven by strong international activity, particularly from Asia and Europe. YVR recently announced a pledge to double our air cargo volumes over the next five years.

The top 10 destinations from YVR over the Labour Day long weekend are:

Travellers coming through YVR this long weekend will also have another option to grab a bite, with YVR’s second and larger Pret A Manger location opening August 31st post-security in the Domestic Terminal, near Gate B17.

Passengers can also help make their journey smoother this busy long weekend by confirming flight details with their airline or at yvr.ca before heading to the airport. Those driving to YVR are encouraged to reserve parking in advance and give themselves adequate driving time, particularly during peak travel periods.

People will also notice the following YVR innovation investments to help make for a seamless journey from curbside to gate:

• Computed Tomography (CT) X-ray equipment at both Domestic checkpoints allows domestic travellers to save time by leaving large electronics, such as laptops, and liquids in their bags for a faster security screening experience.
• Travellers also have more opportunities to use biometric identity verification tools instead of showing boarding passes and physical identification, with United Airlines now joining the biometrics program and YVR reaching a key milestone of 500,000 passengers boarded using biometrics so far this year. This includes Air Canada’s Digital ID program for domestic flights and newly installed e-gates for those travelling to the U.S. via U.S. Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) Traveller Verification Service (TVS) facial comparison technology.

Operations have returned to normal following significant thunderstorms that moved through the region Saturday evening into Sunday morning, impacting flights at YVR.

Safety is our top priority and when lightning is in direct proximity of the airport, airfield operations must be paused for the safety of our employees and passengers. The duration and intensity of the storm meant that from 9:30 p.m. Saturday to 2:55 a.m. Sunday, flights could not depart YVR and many arriving flights were unable to taxi to the gate once landed. This resulted in flight delays and some cancellations.

YVR and our partners activated our terminal response team and called in additional staff from across the airport community to support passengers.

Some flights continued to be impacted Sunday at YVR. We worked closely with our airline partners to support recovery of their schedule and get passengers on their way as quickly as possible.

We continue to encourage travellers to check the status of their flight with their airline before coming to the airport.

This upgrade work will take place overnight from September 14 through December 31.

During this period, the Dinsmore Bridge will be closed to all traffic nightly from Sunday to Friday between the hours of 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Traffic will be detoured via the No. 2 Rd. Bridge, a 6-minute detour.

The planned overnight closure and designated detour route will allow essential maintenance to be completed while supporting continued access to Sea Island for airport operations, employees, and the travelling public. Outside of the closure hours, the speed limit will be reduced to 30 km/h.

Musqueam Territory / Richmond, B.C. (August 19, 2026): As part of its commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has launched a new tool for passengers to be part of the transition to a lower-carbon aviation industry. YVR’s online calculator allows travellers to estimate their flight’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and contribute to the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Contributions made through YVR’s new online calculator will be applied to environmental attributes associated with SAF and will enable airlines’ further use of SAF, starting with Air Canada. SAF’s environmental attributes are the quantified climate benefits or reductions associated with its use, such as the GHG emissions avoided by not extracting non-renewable resources used for fossil jet fuel. Contributing to these attributes supports SAF growth and is essential for scaling SAF globally, as it bolsters activity across the supply chain.

“Sustainable Aviation Fuel is one of the most effective options available today to make meaningful progress towards decarbonizing aviation. This new tool gives travellers the opportunity to help increase the use of SAF and support more sustainable air travel,” said Tamara Vrooman, President & CEO at Vancouver International Airport.

SAF is a lower-carbon alternative to fossil jet fuel. It is made from renewable and waste-derived materials and, depending on the feedstock, production pathway and lifecycle-assessment methodology, can have lower lifecycle GHG emissions than fossil jet fuel. Certain SAF may achieve lifecycle GHG reductions of up to 80 per cent when used in neat form compared with fossil jet fuel. As a “drop-in” fuel, it can be blended with fossil jet fuel and requires no changes to today’s aircraft or existing airport infrastructure.

While SAF is currently in use by some airlines, including those operating at YVR, as an emerging fuel source, limited production and higher prices are obstacles for wider uptake. As production increases and more supply becomes available, costs are likely to lower, increasing the proportion of SAF to be likely used in flights around the world.

This initiative is part of YVR’s broader efforts to raise awareness of SAF and support airline partners in increasing their SAF use to advance the aviation industry’s goal of net zero emissions by 2050. While voluntary contributions through YVR’s online calculator help support the broader adoption of SAF by Air Canada over time, the tool is available to all passengers regardless of which airline they travel on.

WestJet Encore flights operated on Q400 aircraft, as well as codeshare flights operated by airline partners, remain unaffected.

WestJet passengers are advised to check the latest flight information with the airline before coming to the airport, as some schedule changes may continue as the airline returns to regular operations.

YVR is forecasting to see the highest number of travellers of the long weekend on Friday, July 31 with 91,200 passengers. From July 31 to August 3, 340,400 total travellers are expected with an average of 85,100 per day.

As the first half of the summer was dominated by FIFA World Cup 2026 activities in Vancouver, YVR continues to see a busy summer travel season. The airport is expecting an average of 85,300 travellers daily between June 12 and September 8 with a total of 7.6 million travellers over the period. 

YVR asks travellers to check their flight status with their airline and at yvr.ca ahead of coming to the airport. Travellers are also encouraged to the airport to prebook their parking in advance.

Travellers will also notice YVR innovation investments for both passengers and their luggage at security screening and boarding gates:

• Computed Tomography (CT) X-ray equipment at both Domestic checkpoints allows passengers travelling domestically to save time by leaving large electronics, such as laptops, and liquids in their bags for a faster security screening experience.
• Passengers also have more opportunities to use biometric identity verification tools versus having to show boarding passes and physical identification through Air Canada’s Digital ID program and newly installed e-gates for those travelling to the U.S. via U.S. Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) Traveller Verification Service (TVS) facial comparison technology.

During the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June and July 2026, our airport and our city had the privilege of welcoming the world to Vancouver. For many players, officials, fans, and other World Cup visitors, YVR was their first impression of British Columbia, and, for many, it won’t be their last. That is a responsibility we took seriously, and a responsibility our team met with pride, professionalism, and care.

YVR welcomed a total of ten teams over the course of the tournament. From the moment the players stepped off their aircraft and onto our airfield, British Columbia hospitality was on full display. Each team was welcomed by Musqueam representatives upon landing, beginning their time here in a good way and reminding all of us that major global events are also moments to honour place, partnership, and community.

YVR exists to serve our community and the economy that supports it. During the games period, that purpose was especially visible. Nearly 2.8 million passengers travelled through YVR during the games period from June 8 to July 10, with an average of more than 86,000 travellers each day. Our busiest day approached 92,000 passengers. Behind those numbers are real moments. Families arriving for the match of a lifetime, players living their World Cup dreams, and visitors seeing our region at its best.

What stood out most is how smoothly YVR and our teams performed. Travellers listened to the guidance, making use of innovations such as biometric boarding. They also planned their trip to or from YVR in advance and chose transit in greater numbers. TransLink reported that Canada Line ridership from YVR increased by nearly 9 per cent during the World Cup period, an example of how YVR and our partner organizations worked collaboratively together for a greater benefit.

None of this happened by accident. Since June 2022, YVR’s dedicated cross-functional team spanning facilitation, emergency management, baggage, maintenance, communications and many other areas, planned for this moment. Working closely with Musqueam, Canada Border Services Agency, TransLink, airline partners Air Canada and WestJet, NAV CANADA, the Vancouver Host Committee and many other partners, the team ensured YVR was ready to deliver when it mattered.

To every member of the YVR team, thank you. Thank you for the early mornings, the detailed planning, the calm decision-making, the coordination behind the scenes and the warm welcome on the front lines. Together, you helped YVR meet the moment, delivering a strong seamless experience for passengers, teams and visitors.

We also recognize our partners, whose collaboration has been essential to this success. Major events require trust, alignment and a shared commitment to serving the public. What we delivered during the World Cup period shows what is possible when organizations work together with clarity and purpose.

As the World Cup activities in Vancouver wrap up and YVR moves deeper into the busy summer travel season, we will continue encouraging travellers to plan ahead, keep checking YVR.ca for travel-related tips, check with their airline before coming to the airport, consider transit, pre-book parking where possible, and take advantage of the investments we have made in technology, such as biometrics, to help keep the journey smooth.

For now, we take a moment to acknowledge what has been accomplished. YVR helped Vancouver welcome the world. We showcased Canadian pride and hospitality. We supported our community and the regional economy. And we did it together with care, resilience and the steady excellence that defines this team.

Founded in 2005, YVR's Fly Quiet Awards recognize airlines for their commitment to YVR's noise management program and compliance with the airport's Noise Abatement Procedures. The awards also help raise awareness of the importance of responsible noise management for both YVR and our neighbouring communities.

On May 6, YVR announced the 21^st Fly Quiet Award winners at the Chief Pilot’s meeting, which provides updates on the performance and development of YVR’s airside operations.

Each year, awards are presented to airline carriers that demonstrate a strong commitment to noise management. Winners are selected based on having the lowest annual noise level, as measured by YVR’s Aircraft Noise & Operations Monitoring System, and compliance with YVR’s Noise Abatement Procedures. The awards are presented in three categories—propeller, narrow-body jet, and wide-body jet —to reflect the different noise profiles associated with each aircraft type.

As part of today’s celebration, airport workers came together to create a collaborative art installation representing the many employees who keep people and cargo moving through YVR every day. The completed display will serve as a visual reminder of the thousands of people who make up the airport community.

Airport Workers Day also recognizes outstanding contributions across Canada’s aviation sector through peer-nominated awards celebrating dedication and leadership nationally. For the past three years running, YVR colleagues have proudly been among those recognized. This year, Jessica Chan is being recognized for her leadership and contributions to sustainability and environmental initiatives at YVR.

Early in her career, Jessica Chan has already made a lasting impact on YVR, earning recognition as a Canadian Airports Council Rising Star for her exceptional talent, dedication, and commitment to excellence. 

Jessica currently serves as a Field Engineer on YVR’s Airport Terminal Projects team. Prior to this role, she spent four years on the Climate and Environment team, where she played a key role in advancing YVR’s environmental initiatives. Through her work, Jessica demonstrated not only strong technical expertise, but also a determination to continually raise the bar for what is possible. 

YVR’s purpose is to serve our community and the economy that supports it, and Jessica brings that purpose to life by helping ensure airport operations are conducted responsibly and sustainably. Her unwavering dedication to YVR’s water quality monitoring program has strengthened environmental protection across Sea Island while informing operational decisions and infrastructure investments that support both airport operations and the surrounding ecosystem.

As Manager, Airport Capacity, Vivian oversees a complex balancing act by ensuring airlines have the space and resources they need to land, park, and welcome passengers, baggage, and cargo through YVR safely and efficiently. It's a role that requires equal parts expertise, planning, and collaboration. 

While Vivian is a widely respected leader in her field, those who work alongside Vivian know her for something else—the way she brings people together. By embodying YVR’s value of teamwork, Vivian champions a culture built on collaboration, encouraging colleagues to problem-solve, share ideas, and support one another to deliver the best outcomes.

In 2024, Emily Parsons received the Canadian Airports Council's inaugural Outstanding Service Award, recognizing her exceptional commitment to both passengers and colleagues across YVR's airport community. 

Emily first joined the airport community in 2009 and, after serving in a variety of roles, joined YVR’s Guest Experience team in 2023. Since then, she has become known for approaching every challenge as an opportunity to improve the passenger experience. 

When Emily took the lead in supporting YVR's Lost and Found program, she worked closely with her team to understand pain points, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement practical solutions that better serve our passengers. Her collaborative approach reflects YVR's value of teamwork: listening first, supporting others, and working together to deliver meaningful results.
